Weekend Preview: Top-two tussles

The battles at the top of each division remain fierce as Matchweek Eight arrives.

Looking to move on up on Friday

NDC Ontario would finish the day at the top of the Women’s Premier if they beat North Mississauga at Zanchin Automotive Stadium. The defending champions currently sit one point off the top and the aim will be to secure maximum points against a side without a win in 2025.

There is also a single match in the Men’s Championship, when Windsor City travel to North Mississauga. The visitors have tied their last two games, so a win here would continue a their unbeaten run. Their opponents will be no easy task, however, as they sit in fourth place, just three points from the summit.

Battle at the top

It is a crucial Saturday in the Men’s Championship, as first and second place face off.

Sudbury Cyclones currently hold top spot, and they host The Borough, who sit just two points behind their opponents. Both sides are unbeaten so far in 2025, but the hosts have four wins from seven, and The Borough have won three games. Master’s FA sit just behind these two, so a win would be crucial for either.

Third-placed Master’s are in action too, when they host York United Academy at 9pm. The hosts have played an extra game than the two ahead of them, but they can make it a second consecutive victory when they face a York side who have struggled to find consistency this season.

There is one more match in the Men’s Championship on Saturday, with ninth-placed Pickering hosting Whitby. The visitors have had a mixed season so far, sitting six points from the top and looking to build some consistent form, but with no wins in their last five this weekend represents a huge opportunity to climb up the standings.

There is also an important match in the men’s top tier, with defending champions Scrosoppi hosting Vaughan Azzurri. The two teams sit side-by-side in the standings, both on 10 points, but Scrosoppi have played two fewer games. With three games in hand on leaders Sudbury, Scrosoppi can mount a serious title defence with a win this weekend.

North Toronto can make it two wins from two and claim their second league win of 2025 with a victory against Sigma. The hosts are bottom at this stage, but another win here would be huge for their confidence and their place in the division. Their opponents are without a win in three, so this could be an interesting match.

There is a sole match in the Women’s Premier, and Simcoe County Rovers can continue life at the top of the standings with a good result against FC London. The visitors currently sit in first place, a single point ahead of second-placed NDC Ontario who play on Friday, so they could be battling back to the summit come kick-off here.

To tie up Saturday’s action, Rush Canada Academy kick off the weekend’s action in the Women’s Championship, hosting Pickering. The travelling side can cement themselves as title challengers with a win here, but the hosts have won two in a row, scoring 11 goals, so this will be no easy match.

A top-tier selection of Sunday games

The final day of the weekend is the busiest day as numerous games take place on Sunday.

In the Men’s Premier, leaders Alliance can extend their lead at the top and continue their unbeaten 2025 with a good result against second-placed Woodbridge Strikers. The latter are six points behind their opponents but with two games in hand, so three points are crucial for either of these sides in the hunt for the title.

Behind them, fifth-placed Oakville are the home side for their match against Simcoe County Rovers. They sit on 10 points currently but can take advantage of their spare matches and move into contention for the title. Simcoe only sit one point behind them, though, so it is getting very tight in the top tier.

Men’s Premier action ends with FC London on the road to Burlington, as the visitors look to leapfrog their opponents and make it two wins from two in the league.

There are also three games in the Women’s Premier, beginning with Alliance United against Waterloo United. The latter sit just outside the title fight, in fifth and five points off the top, but can go three games unbeaten if they avoid defeat here.

Elsewhere, Guelph United host North Toronto. The visitors have four wins from seven at this stage, and a win can move them into a very tight title challenge. Sitting only two points away from first place and being the highest scorers in the league, they are certainly a side to keep a close eye on.

Finally, Woodbridge Strikers face Vaughan Azzurri, with the away side needing maximum points to firmly move into title contention. They have five wins from seven and could be top by the end of play if results go their way over the weekend.

It is also set to be a busy day in the Women’s Championship with the league leaders, Tecumseh United, in action. They host bottom side Hamilton, who are looking to bounce back after defeat last week and claim their second win of the season. The hosts need all three points if they are to continue at the top of the standings.

Seventh-placed Burlington host the side just behind them, Unionville Milliken, as two sides with identical records aim to find some consistent league form, and another two teams with the same records face off when Oakville are on the road to face Scrosoppi in a bid to move into the top three.

To conclude L1ON matches, Unionville Milliken play Waterloo United in the Men’s Championship. The visitors could move into the top three with a win.

Can perfect form continue in L2?

Cambridge United can make it seven wins from seven in the Men’s Southwest Conference when they travel to Guelph on Thursday. The visitors have enjoyed a perfect record so far in 2025 and can continue it against the bottom side this weekend. On Saturday, Railway City travel to St Catharines Roma Wolves, as the visitors look to leapfrog their opponents.

In the Men’s Central Conference on Saturday, Rush Canada Academy host North Mississauga, as the former aim to move into the top two. It is 10th against 11th in the Women’s Northeast Conference on Saturday, when Master’s play Sudbury Cyclones, and Railway City travel to Cambridge United in the Southwest Conference on Sunday.
