Weekly Rewind: A new leader in the Women’s Championship
Pickering lost top spot in the women’s second tier over the weekend, as Scrosoppi returned to pole position in the promotion hunt.

Into the race
York United Academy made a perfect start to the weekend on Friday night, beating Master’s FA 1-0 to move level on points with their opponents and into the top three. Davin Chhoeun’s goal in the first half moved his side onto 19 points, and to within two points of second place.
Whitby also made it a Friday night to remember when they beat Pickering 4-0 at Telus Dome. Erion Metaj opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, before two quickfire goals from Jeremy Caprietta and Nigel Buckley early in the second half. Mudaser Muhtaj secured the points in the second minute of stoppage time to move the hosts onto 16 points.
Omar Marzouk’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave Unionville Milliken an important away win, and Windsor City also won 1-0, thanks to a late Ottavio Liburdi penalty.
There was one game in the Men’s Premier, which saw Simcoe County Rovers win 3-2 on the road against St Catharines Roma Wolves. Jacob Spizzirri scored a brace after nine minutes and later missed a penalty to miss out on a hat-trick. The hosts fought back to make it 2-2, but Reshaun Walkes’ penalty with 16 minutes to play ensured Simcoe secured the points.
Here to stay
NDC Ontario remained at the top of the Women’s Premier on Saturday when they beat Guelph United 2-1 away from home. Melisa Kekic scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season in the first half, and Olivia Brown’s second-half penalty was not enough for the hosts to complete a comeback.
It was pure entertainment at Varsity Centre, with North Mississauga winning 3-2 against FC London. Nyla Dore-Anderson’s brace and Mara Sanauceanu’s goal cancelled out Gabby Kohut’s and Jade Arthur’s goals, to give the visitors their third win of 2025.
In the Men’s top tier, Scrosoppi continued their good form and showed they are not shying away from their title defence, beating Burlington 3-0 on the road. Tomasz Skublak, Augustus Oku, and Orlendis Benitez Hernandez scored the goals to move their side into third and to within three points of top.
Elsewhere, North Toronto moved further away from the bottom by beating FC London at Downsview Park. A Cyrus Rollocks brace moved his side onto 10 points, and six away from the dreaded 11th place.
With no Sunday games in the men’s second tier, Saturday concluded the division’s weekend, with Guelph tying 2-2 with visitors Hamilton. Noah Medeiros scored a brace either side of Gianfranco Lopreiato’s goal, and he thought he had won it, but Anthony Ostrun saved a point for the hosts deep in injury time.

The Borough also claimed a single point, playing out a goalless tie against Sudbury Cyclones in a battle between the top two. With both sides dropping points, York United Academy have moved closer to the top compared to their position last week.
There was a single game in the Women’s Championship, with Scrosoppi winning 3-1 at Rush Canada Academy to go top of the league, ahead of Pickering. Rush had the lead after four minutes through Caitlyn Gratton before Evana Eyubeh equalized, and Yasmin Castillo and Jahkaya Davis both scored in the space of two minutes to return Scrosoppi to the summit.
Seven Heaven
North Toronto remained in the Women’s Premier title fight on Sunday thanks to a huge 7-0 win over Woodbridge Strikers. Ashley Campbell, Elise Bell and Kiyomi McCausland all scored braces, and Lauren Rowe put the cherry on top to move the visitors onto 26 points and to within four points of first place. Rowe has since signed for AFC Toronto in the Northern Super League.
Simcoe County Rovers also showed they are not going anywhere when they beat Alliance United 3-2 at Varsity Centre. Ally Rowe continued her scoring form with a brace, and Abby Wroe netted to maintain a single-point gap at the summit.
The last game in the women’s top tier was a 1-1 tie between Vaughan Azzurri and Waterloo United. Sophia Cabral’s late penalty cancelled out Nia Fleming-Thompson’s goal, but it was dropped points for Vaughan and a dent in their title hopes.
Statement made
Alliance United are in danger of losing top spot in the Men’s Premier with teams below them having numerous games in hand, but the league leaders still showed they are up for the fight. They beat Oakville 5-2 on Sunday, with Jacob Prested, Kingsley Belele, Kristjan Fortier, Lorenzo Abbaglivo, and a Brandon Duarte own goal securing the win.
The final men’s top-tier match of the weekend saw Woodbridge Strikers remain within touching distance of the top by beating Sigma 2-1. Anthony Aromatario made it 1-0 in the first half, before Dante Ruddock equalized seven minutes later. With the game still level, Ronaldo Marshall scored in the 68th minute to give the hosts all three points.
There was an away victory for Unionville Milliken in the Women’s Championship, as they beat Oakville 2-1; Elyse Galloway and Miya Grant-Clavijo securing the points. Pickering tied 1-1 against Tecumseh United, with a point not enough to reclaim top spot from Scrosoppi.
Eight is great in L2
Sudbury Cyclones enjoyed a perfect Saturday in the Women’s Northeast Conference, beating Unionville Milliken 8-0 to move on to 12 points. The next day, Master’s FA were beaten 3-0 by Scrosoppi.
In the Southwest Conference, Railway City beat Hamilton on Thursday, St Catharines tied 1-1 with Oakville on Saturday, and Cambridge United were defeated 2-1 by Waterloo on Sunday.
In the Men’s Southwest Conference, there was a single game on Saturday when Railway City were beaten at home by Guelph United. On the same day, Rush Canada Academy beat North Toronto 3-0 in the Central Conference, to continue their title fight and remain within four points of top.
