Scrosoppi win the Men’s L1 Cup

Scrosoppi secured their first L1 Cup title on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over four-time champions Vaughan Azzurri.

Miles Green’s opener, and a brace from Luka Juricic, helped Scrosoppi win the Men’s L1 Cup Final and become the first new champions of the competition since 2015.

Playing in their second final in two years, title holders Vaughan Azzurri scored through Marco Sciortino to set up a tense finale after Green and Juricic had established a 2-0 lead for Scrosoppi.

But the Azzurri could not complete the comeback against a clinical Scrosoppi side who went on to score a third, and are looking for further silverware in the league later this week.

John Yacou’s side came into this final with the better form, having beaten Men’s Premier title rivals Woodbridge Strikers at the weekend, and ensured they were on the front foot early on. A free-kick in the 11th minute from Green was saved by goalkeeper Alessio Carbone onto the head of his own defender, and the ball had to be cleared off the line.

The opening goal of the evening came five minutes later as Green, who was enjoying finding space on the wing, got in behind thanks to an Omari Cotterell pass. The winger looked up to see who was arriving in the box before his cross seemed to take a deflection and loop over the goalkeeper, into the net.

Scrosoppi took a one-goal lead into the break, and they came close to extending their advantage soon after the restart. The ball fell to Joshua Parades on the edge of the penalty area, and his half-volley was pushed away but only into the path of Orlendis Benitez Hernandez who headed over.

In the 52nd minute, Scrosoppi found their second with Green proving a threat once again. His pull-back was received by Juricic in the box, who finished calmly past the goalkeeper to claim his first of the match.

Green continued to dictate play, as he set up Nathaniel Susnik and Juricic again for chances in front of goal, but neither could kill the game before the hour mark.

Shortly after, Vaughan made them pay when substitute Nick Spittle’s run down the right flank, and precise cross, ended with fellow sub Sciortino tapping into an empty net to give them hope of a comeback.

The match seemed to turn on its head in the last 20 minutes, and Vaughan were just inches away from levelling. Kayden Dugas found some space down the right, and his cross fell to James Fidalgo who set himself in the box but rattled the crossbar to spare Scrosoppi’s blushes.

With the game wide open, both sides were looking for a crucial goal, and it was Scrosoppi who found it in injury time. Elton Nyumah won a header in midfield to set Juricic away. He played Skublak through on goal, who went round the goalkeeper before returning the ball to his teammate to finish into the open net, all but confirming the victory.

The Men’s L1 Cup had previously only been won by Vaughan and Woodbridge in the six seasons it had featured in the League1 Ontario calendar since 2014. Now Scrosoppi can add their name to the list of champions, and another trophy in their club’s cabinet.
