2024 awards continue with honouring Championship standouts
Ethan Kang wins multiple awards as he and Danielle Sauve are crowned Most Valuable Players from the inaugural Championship seasons.
The 2024 League1 Ontario awards continued to honour Pro-Am stars this week as 17 players were recognised with accolades from the Championship Divisions.
Ethan Kang and Danielle Sauve were crowned as this year’s Most Valuable Players after standout seasons for TFC Academy and BVB IA Waterloo respectively. They both captained their teams to League1 Ontario history as they became the inaugural champions of the men’s and women’s L1ON second tier.
It was a very competitive season for awards after so many fantastic individual and team performances. The three finalists for each award, and the eventual winners and All-Star teams, were determined by a culmination of factors: a list of nominees was submitted by each club for each category and a voting ballot took place across coaches and league staff. Those votes were then combined with points awarded to players who were selected by coaches as one of the ‘Three Stars’ of each match in the 2024 Men’s and Women’s Championship seasons.
Women’s round-up
In addition to Sauve’s MVP award, BVB IA Waterloo picked up several awards after topping the Women’s Championship. Goalscoring shot-stopper Natalie Mouradian was named the Goalkeeper of the Year and teammate Jaiden McBain the Defender of the Year, with Greg Jespersen picking up the Coach of the Year accolade.
Standings runners-up Scrosoppi had a fantastic inaugural season and stars Sahara Zingano and Ella Cahill were honoured with the Midfielder and Young (U20) Player of the Year awards respectively.
Jaiden Morgan shone up front for Hamilton United and was named the division’s Forward of the Year, with the Golden Boot being split three ways as Teagan Handley, Abby Kraemer, and Sahara Zingano all scored 10 regular-season goals.
Men’s round-up
FC London took home three separate awards following a promotion-winning season in the Men’s Championship. Luka Palajsa and Ryan Baker were recognised for their outstanding campaigns as Goalkeeper and Defender of the Year respectively, with Yiannis Tsalatsidis being crowned the Coach of the Year.
St Catharines Roma Wolves also won promotion and Ronaldo Homenszki – a rising talent in their ranks – was honoured as the Young (U20) Player of the Year after leading his club’s scoring charts with 11 goals from 17 games.
Gershom Dupuy also scored 11 goals and was crowned the Forward of the Year after his huge impact in Windsor City’s side, and Luc Coulombe picked up the Golden Boot after notching 12 times for North Mississauga.
Alongside his MVP award, Ethan Kang was also named the Midfielder of the Year and is certainly one to watch for the future.
