Toronto, ON – (September 18, 2024) – League1 Ontario can confirm that Cambridge United have been awarded a license to compete in the League1 Ontario Men’s and Women’s League2 Divisions in 2025.

The club have been operating in youth soccer for more than 50 years, having initially been founded as Cambridge Youth Soccer in 1973. In 2021, they joined League1 Ontario to compete in the reserve competitions for the first time.

Cambridge were runners up in the Men’s U21 Reserve Division’s South West Conference in 2023 with eight wins from 14 matches, and also secured third in the Women’s Reserve Division South West Conference. The club followed this up by securing a top-five finish in the Men’s Reserve League this season.

There are 3,500 players at Cambridge, spanning all ages, and the addition of the League2 program now adds another level to the city’s soccer scene, providing a direct pathway to Pro-Am soccer from the youth programs involved in the Ontario Player Development League.

The club has big aspirations on and off the field. From promotion to the Championship level, to completing the development of a new state-of-the-art soccer facility with multiple fields and a focus on sustainability and local wildlife protection.

Chris Keem, Operations Manager at League1 Ontario, said: “Cambridge have been a guest club of League1 Ontario through our relationship with the Ontario Player Development League, and have shown great desire to step up another level and provide more opportunity for their large pool of developing players.

“The club have worked hard over recent years to meet the standards that we set for ‘A teams’ in League1 Ontario, and they have gone above and beyond to build their new facility where players, coaches, families, and fans will be able to enjoy being a part of the soccer community.

“We would like to congratulate Cambridge on their license, and we look forward to welcoming the club for the 2025 season. “

Jon Morgan, Technical Director and League1 Program Manager at Cambridge United, said: “The quality of the environment created by the professional approach of the League1 Ontario administration made our experience as a guest club in the Reserve Divisions exceptionally enjoyable. We are a forward-thinking club, and we strongly believe that the City of Cambridge community is ready to support the club as we embark on the next stage of this journey.

“Having the opportunity to step into League2 allows our youth players to be further inspired and to strive to be the best they can be on and off the pitch. We look forward to welcoming teams to the new Cambridge Soccer Park next year.”
