Scrosoppi B earn promotion opportunity to Men’s Championship
A prolific performance from Scrosoppi saw them beat Pickering in the first men’s Pro/Rel Playoff.
Miles Green scored a brace as Scrosoppi B put six goals past Pickering in the first men’s Pro/Rel Playoff, granting themselves the opportunity to be promoted to the Men’s Championship for the 2025 season.
It took less than two minutes for Green to open the scoring, as the 2023 CPL U-SPORTS Draft pick for Forge FC headed home a dangerous Noah Dedomincis cross, giving his League2 team an early lead.
Pickering responded just 10 minutes later when a corner kick fell to Ahmad Wehbe on the edge of the box, and he thundered the ball past goalkeeper Jared Maloney for the equalizer.
But a Scrosoppi onslaught soon followed. First Ryan James latched onto a looping ball from Manveer Gill that beat the Pickering back-line, and he tucked the ball underneath the goalkeeper from close range. Danial Rafisamii extended the lead with a superb right-footed effort from outside the area.
Green bagged his second of the game in the 40th minute, peeling away from his marker to flick a header across goal and into the bottom corner. Rafisamii forced a strong save out of Pickering goalkeeper Joshua Naraine in stoppage time before the break, but Scrosoppi were quickest to react and Michael Crocco notched his side’s fifth to cap off a prolific first-half performance.
Both sides made changes in the second half, and one of them made an immediate impact for Scrosoppi. Efe Eyubeh was hardly on the field for a minute before slotting a through ball into the bottom corner after the Pickering defence were pulled out of position.
With the result all-but confirmed, arguably the best goal of the game came from Pickering with 15 minutes to go. The ball came to Deandre Watkins and he unleashed a rocket from distance that beat the diving goalkeeper and gave his team a second goal.
It was the 15th win of the season for Scrosoppi B, who finished top of the Men’s League2 Southwest Conference with an unbeaten record. They lost their playoff semifinal against eventual division champions Vaughan Azzurri B, but won the repechage match against Sigma B to qualify for this Pro/Rel Playoff. Pickering were then confirmed as their opponents after they finished bottom of the Men’s Championship division, and yesterday’s victory mean’s Scrosoppi B can opt to replace Pickering in next season’s second tier.
There were more celebrations for Scrosoppi yesterday as their ‘A team’ were crowned Men’s Premier Division champions following their 2-0 win against ProStars, rounding off a memorable season for the club and highlighting their impressive squad depth and talent pool.
