TFC Academy to focus on MLS NEXT in 2025
The 2014 men’s champions will not play in League1 Ontario next season after an age group restructure at MLS NEXT.

TFC Academy have advised League1 Ontario they will not be fielding teams in L1ON competition for the 2025 season following a restructuring of the MLS NEXT age group levels.
With MLS NEXT planning to introduce a U18 competition, Toronto FC will enter their older academy teams into MLS NEXT and disband their U19 group which has participated in League1 Ontario in 2024.
TFC Academy were the first League1 Ontario champions, winning the Men’s Division 10 years ago in 2014. They have a chance to collect further silverware in their return to League1 Ontario this season, following a five-year hiatus from the Pro-Am game, as they are currently top of the Men’s Championship by one point.
The League1 Ontario Board of Directors has decided that if TFC Academy finish first in the division’s standings, they will be crowned champions of the Men’s Championship. The second-placed team will then win automatic promotion to the Men’s Premier Division and the third-placed team will qualify for the promotion/relegation playoff.
If TFC Academy finish second in the division, they will not qualify for the playoff game and the third-placed finishers will instead take on the Premier’s 11th-placed team for a place in the top tier next year.
Chris Keem, Operations Manager of League1 Ontario, said: “We would like to thank TFC Academy for their participation in League1 Ontario’s 10th-anniversary season; a decade on from their title-winning campaign in our inaugural year.
“There are still plenty of games to go in the Men’s Championship title race, and we look forward to seeing who will be crowned our inaugural champions of the second tier.”
Anthony Capotosto, Director of TFC Academy, said: “We are both grateful and proud to have participated in League 1 Ontario for the 2024 outdoor season.
“Thank you to all the L1ON stakeholders for their collaboration, and for providing this development opportunity for our Academy players. We wish everyone involved continued success moving forward.”
