Weekend Preview: A top-four battle in the Women’s Championship
There are close battles at the top and bottom of each L1ON division, including a crucial Sunday in the women’s second tier.

Making the first move
As the title race continues in the Women’s Premier, it could be a Friday of fixtures that ends up piling the pressure on those playing in the days later.
Vaughan Azzurri can extend their lead at the top of the standings when they face Waterloo United away from home. The visitors currently sit two points ahead of second, who play two days later, so they could enjoy a comfortable weekend with a win against a side who currently sit fifth.
Also on Friday, NDC Ontario, who sit third, can make a move at the summit if they beat Guelph United. The home team are just three points away from Vaughan, so the weekend could begin very interestingly at the top of this division.
In the Men’s Championship, table-topping Sudbury Cyclones can cement top spot with an away win against second-placed North Mississauga. The travelling team sit on 14 points, three ahead of their opponents, so this match is crucial for both sides’ seasons.
Looking for lift-off
It is a Saturday involving sides looking to build momentum in this L1ON season, as gaps are beginning to form in every division.
Sigma and St Catharines Roma Wolves are two of these in the Men’s Premier, who play each other at 9pm. They currently sit in seventh and ninth place, respectively, so they are aiming to put together a successful run of games. The latter are winless in three, while Sigma were beaten last week following their win in Matchweek Five.

Elsewhere, Simcoe County Rovers will have a difficult match when they travel to Alliance, who are top of the standings at this stage. The visitors are sixth with two wins, two ties, and two losses, while the home side can extend their lead at the top and remain unbeaten to continue a strong start to 2025.
In the Women’s Championship, the day begins with bottom side Hamilton United travelling to Rush Canada Academy. The visitors enjoyed their first win of the season last week when they beat Oakville, so they are looking to continue their momentum into this match against the sixth-placed side.
Just one game comes from the Men’s Championship on Saturday, between Guelph and Whitby. The pair sit side-by-side in fifth and sixth, so both will be aiming to move into the top four and potentially the title race.
There is a solo game in the Women’s Premier, when North Mississauga host FC London. The two sides sit next to each other at the bottom of the table, so three points here would be crucial for either of their seasons.
Sunday stipulations
The busiest day of the matchweek comes on the final day of the weekend, and the first day of June, as plenty of games take place on Sunday.
The Men’s Championship sees the most matches take place, beginning with Unionville Milliken’s trip to Master’s FA. The visitors are winless since matchweek two, while Master’s are fourth and looking to put the pressure on in the title race.
Elsewhere, Windsor City will be looking to move away from second-bottom when they face York United Academy on the road. The hosts have had a mixed start to the season, but have lost their last two matches, so their aim will be to make home advantage count.
With the top two in action earlier in the weekend, The Borough can cement their place as title challengers with a win against Hamilton. The visitors are four points from top before any games begin, and are planning to beat a winless side to take advantage of any slip-ups above them.
Finally in the Men’s Championship, ninth-placed Pickering host eighth-placed Waterloo as the visitors look to make it three wins in a row and four games unbeaten.
There are three matches in the Men’s top tier, starting with Oakville against FC London. The latter are without a win so far, but the hosts can firmly cement themselves as title challengers with three points.
Defending champions Scrosoppi are back in action following a week off, as they travel to Woodbridge Strikers. The home side currently sit in second, three points off the top but with a game in hand, while Scrosoppi are fifth with two games in hand, so this is a crucial matchup for both sides as they hunt success in 2025.
The third and final match sees Vaughan Azzurri face North Toronto. The former are also right in the middle of the title fight, sitting on 11 points after five matches. They face a winless North Toronto team, who will be desperate to move away from the bottom.
Simcoe County Rovers continue their title hunt in the Women’s Premier when they host Alliance United live on YouTube. The home side are two points behind Vaughan Azzurri with four wins from six matches, but the visitors will be no easy task after their 3-0 win last week.
North Toronto can also become top-three challengers with a good result against Woodbridge Strikers, and on Tuesday, Guelph host North Mississauga.
There are two matches in the Women’s Championship, beginning with Tecumseh welcoming Whitby. These sides are currently second and third in the standings, so this is an important match for both if they are to challenge Pickering at the summit.
To tie up the weekend’s action, Pickering will have their eyes over their shoulders on Tecumseh’s match, before they host Oakville in a game that concludes a day of top-four battles.
L2 matches
On Sunday, Cambridge United host Railway City in the Men’s Southwest Conference, as the home team look to make it six wins from six in 2025. Meanwhile, the visitors are six points off top with a game in hand, so this is an important day for both teams – and live on League1 Ontario’s YouTube channel.
In Men’s Central Conference, Rush Canada Academy are the home side for their match against Woodbridge Strikers.
In the Women’s Northeast Conference, Sudbury Cyclones can claim their second win of the season with three points against Whitby. On Friday in the Southwest Conference, St Catharines Roma Wolves travel to Burlington, and on Sunday, Railway City host Cambridge United as the visitors aim to win five games from five.
