weekend preview
There are important matches at the bottom of both the Men’s Premier and Championship Divisions this weekend, as well as a replay of the 2023 men’s final live on YouTube.
Sigma showdown
The Men’s Premier matchweek starts in the bottom half of the table with a key game between two teams battling to avoid playing St Catharines Roma Wolves in September’s Pro/Rel Playoff.
Sigma are four points ahead of visitors Guelph United who currently occupy that dreaded playoff place, and a win would secure their spot in the division for 2025. However, if Guelph win, there will be a point between the two teams going into the final matchweek and safety will be all to play for.
At the top end of the table, Scrosoppi meet Simcoe County Rovers on League1 Ontario’s YouTube channel this Saturday. It’s certainly one to watch given these teams shared the field in an epic Men’s Premier Division Final last year, and both are unbeaten since June 30.
Scrosoppi have games in hand on the leaders Vaughan Azzurri, meaning Vaughan need victory regardless of how their title rivals get on in Barrie. Vaughan are also away as they take on fifth-placed North Toronto.
ProStars then host Blue Devils on Saturday night in what could be a very close game, with these sides three points apart in the bottom half of the standings.
The two games on Sunday see Burlington take on Alliance United – two teams for whom wins have been hard to come by of late – and whether Hamilton United can get their first win of the season against a Woodbridge Strikers side now out of the title race.
Relegation scrap
It’s a crazy picture at the bottom of the Men’s Championship after 17 matchweeks, with three points separating fifth and 10th in the standings. The last-placed team in the division at the end of the weekend will play in next weekend’s Pro/Rel Playoff against Scrosoppi B.
On Friday night we have Windsor City versus BVB IA Waterloo with both teams on 16 points. Win and you stay up, lose and you could be leapfrogged by Pickering and drop into the playoff spot. A tie also wouldn’t be good enough for Windsor if Pickering win.
Also playing at the same time are – you guessed it – Pickering. They’ve got a tough test against high-flyers FC London, but with automatic promotion already secure for the visitors and nothing but pride to play for, are the cards falling in Pickering’s favour?
With so many teams behind them, fifth-placed North Mississauga visit fourth-placed Unionville Milliken with their Men’s Championship spot confirmed for the 2025 season.
A point for Darby against champions TFC Academy would see them avoid the relegation playoff, but if they lose, other results across the division may see tiebreakers decide their fate. TFC Academy also dropped points against Windsor last week having confirmed their title, so it may be an ideal time for Darby to take on the top team in the league.
The last game of the weekend sees Master’s FA take on North Mississauga. Despite being fourth from bottom, a win for Pickering and a tie between Windsor and Waterloo would see Master’s drop into the playoff spot. They will be watching the games closely this weekend, as will fans of this dramatic inaugural Men’s Championship season.
