weekend preview
National women’s champions will be decided in Ontario, as the men’s divisions continue with the latest round of exciting encounters.
Champions decided at Tim Hortons Field
Hamilton, Ontario, is hosting the League1 Canada Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship this weekend, featuring the four provincial champions from League1 Ontario, League1 BC, Ligue1 Québec, and for the first time, League1 Alberta.
NDC Ontario are the home representatives after an incredible season in the Women’s Premier Division that led them to their second league title in three years.
There are two semifinal matches on Friday, followed by the third-place playoff and final on the Sunday. Tickets can be bought individually or as an all-access pass.
On the middle Saturday, Tim Hortons Field is also hosting the Women’s League2 Final featuring Alliance United B and Vaughan Azzurri B, who progressed through to the title-decider this week via the playoffs. Both teams played in the Northeast Conference, with Alliance topping the division on 39 points.
Pushing on
There are three matches on Friday night that kick off the men’s fixtures this weekend, all of which coming from the Men’s Championship.
Darby may be five points clear of the relegation playoff spot but will not be resting on their laurels, as Windsor City, just two points below them, are coming to town to edge themselves closer to survival in the second tier.
The bottom side occupying the playoff spot are Pickering, and they need victory against Master’s FA if they want to give themselves a platform to climb up the table and to safety.
Only six points separate Pickering and mid-table – where North Mississauga currently are, and they take on BVB IA Waterloo whose women’s team won the Championship and promotion to the Premier Division on Wednesday.
Lots of eyes will be on the Saturday clash between TFC Academy and St Catharines Roma Wolves. These are the two teams with the best form in the division, and whichever way this one goes, there could be major ramifications in the title and promotion pictures.
Super Saturday
There are four matches on Saturday in the Men’s Premier Division; the first one kicking off at 12pm when Sigma host Burlington – two teams struggling for form in the bottom-half of the table.
ProStars have lost their last four, and they will be looking to turn around their run of results against Alliance United who have tied four and won once in their last five. Alliance still also have an outside shot of the title.
There’s a replay of the 2023 Men’s Premier semifinal between Simcoe County Rovers and Vaughan Azzurri, as these two sides will go head-to-head once again in Barrie. This match finished 1-1 earlier in the season, and no doubt there will be no love lost between these clubs.
Both sides also come into this match in fine form – Vaughan are top of the division with four wins in their last five, including a 4-0 victory against Burlington on Wednesday, and Simcoe have been just as impressive to climb up to fifth in the standings.
The division’s bottom-side Hamilton United tied with Guelph United on Thursday, and they are back in action on Saturday to take on a dangerous North Toronto side.
Guelph meanwhile will visit Blue Devils in the action on Sunday, with the title-chasing Scrosoppi on the road at Woodbridge Strikers in a second versus third clash in the standings with five points between them.
