Weekend Preview: Clashes at the top

The top two teams meet in the Men’s Premier this weekend, as third face fourth in the Men’s Championship’s promotion battle.

The hunter vs the hunted

There is currently a five-point gap at the summit of the Men’s Premier, with Woodbridge Strikers just a tie away from securing the title. Their closest competitors stand in their way this weekend, though, as Scrosoppi host the all-important match between the top two.

Reigning champions Scrosoppi can take the fight to the final weekend with a victory, reducing the gap to Woodbridge to just two points.

Oakville need three points at FC London if they are to keep up their hopes of reaching the top four. Only four points separate third and seventh heading into the final two matchweeks of the season, so the fight is on to finish in as high a position as possible.

Saturday also sees North Toronto host Vaughan Azzurri, as the visitors look to climb the standings while North Toronto cannot move up from their current placing of 10th.

There is just one match on Sunday, when Simcoe County Rovers conclude their season by welcoming Alliance United to J.C. Massie Field. Victory for Simcoe would guarantee themselves a third-placed finish.

A new leader

Tuesday saw Unionville Milliken claim top spot in the Men’s Championship with a 5-2 win at Guelph United. The home side raced into a two-goal lead through Gianfranco Lopreiato and Gray Yates, but George Akpabio and Omar Marzouk’s braces, alongside a goal from Abubakar Hussein, completed the recovery for Unionville to take maximum points.

An automatic promotion spot is out of reach for Whitby now, as seven points separate them and second place with two games remaining. They can still finish the season on a high, though, and welcome Windsor City on Friday night.

Elsewhere, Waterloo United travel to North Mississauga as they look for their sixth win of the season.

Sudbury Cyclones will have their eyes on reclaiming first place on Saturday at home to Hamilton United; they had looked to be sitting comfortably at the summit but, after a dip in form, they now head into their final two matches level on points with Unionville Milliken.

Concluding Saturday, Master’s FA can take a big step closer to a top-half finish this season if they defeat Pickering at Jayde Riviere Turf Field.

It’s all eyes on the promotion race on Sunday when Unionville Milliken face Guelph United on Sunday. With two games remaining, victory here could set up a dramatic final matchweek depending on Sudbury’s result against Hamilton.

There’s also a clash between third and fourth as The Borough welcome York United Academy. These teams are only split by one point, and a win for either would put the pressure on whoever is in second place heading into the season finale.

This is also a crucial match for York in the battle for the Pro/Rel Playoff spot. The Borough have two games next week, so York need to lay down their marker in their head-to-head this weekend.
