Weekend Preview: Final games in the women’s competitions

There are three sides in with a Premier Division title chance, and four teams aiming for promotion from the Championship.

Hunting for silverware

There is a three-point gap between first and third as Simcoe County Rovers, NDC Ontario, and North Toronto look to claim the title. The latter are carrying their L1 Cup victory into the weekend, with the hope of making it two trophies in a week.

North Toronto make the first move this weekend when they welcome bottom-side Alliance United to Downsview Park. The hosts can only finish level on points with Simcoe, who are currently top, but they held the upper hand during the season with a win and a tie, so only three points here would be enough to challenge for the championship.

A day later, Simcoe also have the opportunity to lift the trophy in front of their home fans, as they face Vaughan Azzurri. This one kicks off several hours before NDC Ontario’s match, so a victory for the Rovers would be enough to become champions in 2025.

NDC play FC London later in the day, so they will know by the time of their match whether it is still possible to finish first. Their opponents have struggled this season, but they still have the chance to finish eighth and guarantee safety in the division.

Also on Saturday, Woodbridge Strikers travel to North Mississauga, with the latter aiming for a win to avoid dropping into the Pro/Rel Playoff. Alliance could still get out of this three-way relegation battle as they are level on points with London.

The regular season finishes on Monday when Guelph United host Waterloo United.

Potential promotion parties

Only four points separate first and sixth in the Women’s Championship, with plenty of sides look to claim a title and automatic promotion, or the Pro/Rel Playoff spot.

Hamilton United welcome Unionville Milliken on Saturday to kick off the weekend’s matches, with a win for the home side guaranteeing them a top-two finish and, at least, the Pro/Rel Playoff. Moving onto 29 points would mean nobody behind can catch them, but the pressure is off for their opponents as they sit seventh with little to play for.

The first of the Saturday’s matches begins with Whitby’s visit to Burlington, with the away side currently sitting on 25 points. Victory here would put them top if Hamilton drop points, but all eyes would be on the games later in the day.

Elsewhere, Oakville host Tecumseh United. These teams sit side-by-side in the standings at this stage, and while both are outside the top four, they are still in with a chance of securing a place in the Pro/Rel playoff.

Scrosoppi are in the best position heading into the final match of the regular season as they sit top, but could find themselves as low as fourth by the time they travel to Pickering. Their opponents are also hot on their heels, so this could be a tight and tense match on Sunday evening.

Kickstarting August

Woodbridge Strikers look to be comfortable at the summit of the Men’s Premier, with a six-point gap between themselves and Scrosoppi in second place.

St Catharines Roma Wolves earned a hard-fought point at Scrosoppi in midweek, and they are back in action on Saturday when they travel to FC London. The Roma Wolves are still within reach of a top-two finish and can make it a successful week with a victory against a team who have struggled in 2025.

On the same day, Simcoe County Rovers will aim to continue chasing down Woodbridge when they welcome Sigma at J.C. Massie Field. The home side have played an extra two games than those above, meaning it’s a tall task to steal the silverware this season.

Sunday sees the league leaders travel to Vaughan Azzurri, with the chance to further extend the gap to second place. With just one loss so far in 2025, the visitors will be looking to carry their momentum through to the end and claim silverware.

Scrosoppi are also on the road, facing Oakville at Pine Glen. It will be a difficult gap to chase down if they are to defend their title, but their L1 Cup semifinal against Simcoe County Rovers on August 6 will be on their minds too. The visitors will be hoping to replicate their 2-0 victory from the reverse fixture, as the season approaches its end.

Elsewhere, Burlington host a North Toronto looking to catch-up with Sigma and avoid the Pro/Rel Playoff.

A busy weekend

The Men’s Championship is another division that is difficult to call as we head into August, with Sudbury Cyclones ahead of plenty of teams hunting promotion.

After Hamilton and Guelph tied last night, the Cyclones continue their hunt for a first-place finish when they welcome Master’s FA on Friday. The home side currently sit five points ahead of second place, and a win here would further increase their chances for silverware and promotion.

York United Academy currently hold the second automatic promotion spot, and they are on the road to face Whitby. With the table as tight as it is, a victory for the hosts would move them from fifth to within a point of their opponents.

Concluding Friday, Windsor City are the home side for their match against Waterloo United. North Mississauga and Pickering sit seventh and eighth respectively at this stage and face off in Saturday’s solo game.

There are two matches on Sunday to finish the matchweek, beginning with The Borough facing Guelph United. The former currently sit in third place but could find themselves a lot lower by the time they play. It has been a season of ties for them, with eight of their matches ending level, so a victory here is the only goal.

Rounding up the weekend, Unionville Milliken also continue their promotion push, welcoming Hamilton United.
