Weekend Preview: First versus third in the Men’s Championship
Sudbury Cyclones play Whitby in a high-stakes match as regular-season action continues across League1 Ontario.

Five on Friday
Following numerous L1 Cup matches, there are games up and down the L1 pyramid on May 16, with an opportunity for the current Women’s Premier leaders to extend their lead.
The action begins with current table-toppers North Toronto’s visit to defending champions NDC Ontario. The visitors have three wins from four games so far and sit top of the standings with ten points, while NDC they have nine points from a possible 12 and are coming off the back of an L1 Cup victory, so this will be one to keep an eye on.
There are two matches in the Men’s Championship, beginning with a clash between Hamilton United and Waterloo United. This is already a crucial game for both sides who are winless in 2025.
Elsewhere, North Mississauga are aiming to put pressure on at the top of the standings in their home game against York United Academy. The hosts currently have two wins and two ties from four matches and sit two points off Sudbury Cyclones in top spot. For York, they will be aiming to make it four games unbeaten following two ties and a win recently.
The Men’s Premier also has action on Friday evening, as Simcoe County Rovers travel to North Toronto. The hosts will be looking for their first win of 2025, while Simcoe can make it four games unbeaten and move up the standings.
To conclude Friday, Pickering’s women, who were beaten in the cup by Simcoe on Tuesday, host Burlington in the Women’s Championship and are aiming to go top while Tecumseh United have a bye week.
Sudbury at the summit
The side currently at the summit of the Men’s Championship standings, Sudbury Cyclones, host the day’s most notable match against third-place Whitby. The hosts are unbeaten at this stage, with three wins out of their four matches so far, while the visitors have seven points from a possible twelve. This should be an exciting match in the title hunt.
Also in the Men’s Championship, fourth-place Master’s FA are the home side for their match against Guelph United, who sit sixth with a win and two ties from their three games in 2025. The hosts are unbeaten, but have tied four of five matches so far, so they will be aiming to turn those into wins.
The final match in that division is Pickering welcoming Windsor City, two sides who sit side-by-side in the standings. For the hosts, they are looking for their first win of the season, while the away side have three defeats alongside their win against Whitby last week.

There are two matches in the Women’s Premier, starting with FC London against Vaughan Azzurri. The two sides already have a five-point gap between them, with the away side winning three of their four matches so far this year. For FC London, the aim is to put last week’s 5-0 defeat to North Toronto behind them and move up the standings.
Elsewhere, Waterloo United host North Mississauga. The home side have had a mixed start to 2025 and will be wanting to bounce back from last week’s defeat against a side with three losses from three at this stage.
In the Men’s Premier, second-place Alliance United host Burlington after defeating reigning champions Scrosoppi last time out, and third-place Whitby travel to a winless Rush Canada Academy in the Women’s Championship.
The Strikers are striking
On Sunday, St Catharines Roma travel to Woodbridge to play an unbeaten Strikers side. The hosts are looking to continue a solid start to 2025 following two wins and a tie – Ronaldo Marshall scored four in their 5-1 midweek Men’s Premier win against North Toronto – while the visitors have two wins and two losses.
Scrosoppi return after a week off, when they host FC London. The home side sat top before last week and have two wins and a loss from their three matches in 2025. They face a London side with just one point from a possible nine so far.
To finish the weekend’s Men’s Premier matches, Vaughan Azzurri host a Sigma side that picked up their first win last week.
In the Women’s Premier, Woodbridge Strikers face Alliance United. These are two sides that have struggled at the beginning of 2025, sitting eighth and ninth, so a win would be vital for either.
There are two games in the Women’s Championship, starting with Oakville against Hamilton United. The latter need a win after three defeats, while the home side have had a mixed start to 2025. Scrosoppi are also in action, hosting Unionville Milliken.
The Borough host Unionville Milliken in a mid-table clash in the Men’s Championship.
