Weekend Preview: big tests in the second tier
Unionville Milliken are one of League1 Ontario’s in-form teams and could move into the promotion places, as Hamilton United and Scrosoppi face off in the women’s competition.

One point in it
It is set to be a tight and tense end to the Women’s Premier this season with the top three sides only separated by a single point. The weekend’s action began on Thursday and saw league leaders NDC Ontario win 1-0 at Woodbridge Strikers, earning some breathing space before the chasing pack play.
On Saturday North Toronto, who are now second, host Waterloo United. The home side have been third for most of this season but recent results, including a 4-0 win at North Mississauga on Monday night, have put them firmly into the title race. Their weekend opponents are currently sixth.

Elsewhere, Alliance United are looking to finish the season in better form following just one win in 15 games – they face Guelph United at Varsity Centre. Their opponents are now 13 points away from the top three.
On Sunday, NDC Ontario can further increase their title chances if they make it two wins in a matter of days. They are on the road to play Vaughan Azzurri, who sit fourth, eight points away from third.
Simcoe County Rovers occasionally held top spot this season but now sit third. The aim will be to bounce back up at 6pm, when they host North Mississauga. Concluding the weekend, Woodbridge Strikers are the home side for their game against FC London.
Make it count
Action from the men’s top tier begins on Friday night under the lights when St Catharines Roma Wolves host Vaughan Azzurri, live on League1 Ontario’s YouTube channel.
A day later, leaders Woodbridge Strikers travel to Sigma. The visitors have extended their advantage at the top to three points, and still have three games in hand, so another win is the goal.
Scrosoppi head into Saturday in high spirits following their L1 Cup victory on penalties. They face Burlington at home, and with a semifinal now on the horizon, momentum is the key for the defending champions. They are still in with a shot at a second consecutive title but have work to do if they are to chase down the four-point gap.
North Toronto head to FC London which sees the bottom two sides face off. With four wins between them in 2025, they are staring down at relegation to the Championship, making this game very important for both teams if either one wants to avoid an automatic drop.
Sunday sees Alliance United travel to Oakville in a bid to remain in the title scrap for as long as possible. With an extra three matches played, and Woodbridge on good form, their chances are dropping, but the aim stays the same this weekend – to win.
The final match of the weekend sees Simcoe County Rovers welcome St Catharines Roma Wolves, who will be looking to make it six points in three days.
Late surges
The promotion hunt in the Men’s Championship is becoming an entertaining one and second place is anyone’s guess. Whitby kick off the weekend on Friday against North Mississauga following their 2-1 win at Hamilton two days earlier. Another victory for the hosts would move them onto 26 points, just two away from the runners-up spot.
Also on Friday, Master’s FA travel to Windsor City with a chance to move to 25 points in the league. They haven’t played since their 3-0 win against Waterloo United 10 days ago so will need to quickly find their feet in another important match.
York United Academy are also promotion hopefuls, and they face Hamilton United on Saturday. The York Lions Stadium has only seen one defeat so far in 2025, so they must carry their good home form into this game if they are to challenge the front-runners.
Two of the bottom sides are also in Saturday action when Waterloo United face Guelph United.
On Sunday, league leaders Sudbury Cyclones can move closer to promotion with a win at Unionville Milliken. The Cyclones currently sit three points clear of second, but the trip to the third-placed side will be no easy task, as Unionville have won their last six regular-season matches and surged up the standings.
The Borough, who are two points ahead of Unionville and currently hold the runners-up spot, host Pickering. With every team playing before them this matchweek, the pressure will be on to claim another positive result.
Happy in Hamilton
It is a quieter weekend in the women’s second tier this weekend but the matches remain just as important. There is one game on Saturday, when Rush Canada Academy host Oakville, with both sides on the same number of points at this stage in eighth and seventh respectively. The top half is just out of reach, but the goal is to finish strongly.
A day later, second-placed Scrosoppi play against Hamilton United, who are currently third and another League1 Ontario team in top form. A win for Scrosoppi would move them back to the summit, but defeat would mean their opponents leapfrog them and maintain their game in hand. For leaders Pickering, they can only watch it all unfold as they have a week off.
Tecumseh are also chasing the top two, and they host Burlington in the late kick-off. A win would move the home side onto 24 points and well into the mix. The last game of the weekend sees Whitby travel to Unionville Milliken.
Preparing for the postseason
Cambridge United won 2-1 at Guelph United on Thursday having secured their spot in the Men’s Southwest Conference postseason, and they play again on Saturday at Railway City. Thursday’s Central Conference match saw Rush Canada Academy tie 2-2 at Sigma.
In the Women’s Northeast Conference, Sudbury Cyclones host North Mississauga on Saturday, and Master’s FA travel to Alliance United a day later. In the Southwest Conference on Sunday, Railway City host Hamilton United after booking their place in the playoffs, and Cambridge United are the home side against Burlington.
