Weekend preview
After an exciting opening week in League1 Ontario, every point matters as we head into Matchweek Two.
Friday Fixtures
In the Men’s Championship, BVB IA Waterloo take on FC London – two teams who made winning starts to Championship life last weekend. Pickering also host St Catharines Roma Wolves as they both look for their first win of the regular season.
Darby enjoyed a promising start to 2024 in the L1 Cup but were defeated 4-1 by TFC Academy in their Championship debut. They’ll be aiming for a statement win against Unionville Milliken who were victorious against Master’s FA last time out.
Darby are also in action in the Women’s Championship as they host Scrosoppi, kicking off at South Courtice Turf at the same time as their men’s counterparts – who are at TELUS Dome – at 8pm.
Divisional Debuts
It’s an exciting day in the Men’s League2 Division on Saturday as Sudbury Cyclones and The Borough FC play their inaugural divisional games. The Cyclones face Alliance United 2 while The Borough, who won against higher-level opposition in the L1 Cup First Round, open against North Toronto 2.
Rush Canada, who have featured previously at League1 Ontario reserve level, also field their first team against Scrosoppi 2 on Saturday. St Catharines Roma Wolves take on Burlington 2 in the Women’s League2, before Master’s FA welcome Woodbridge Strikers 2.
Saturday also brings two Women’s Premier games, with the 2022 and 2023 division finalists both in action.
Former champions NDC Ontario are on the road and looking to go 2-0 this season as they visit North Mississauga. This game is live on League1 Ontario’s YouTube channel.
Reigning champions Alliance United got off to a flying start to the regular season last weekend and visit Simcoe County Rovers, who were marginally defeated by Vaughan Azzurri in their opening game. Alliance were also 2-0 victors in this fixture last year.
This tie is also taking place in the Men’s Premier. Both clubs gained a point from the opening weekend but with contrasting emotions. Simcoe equalized in the dying embers against Vaughan Azzurri, but Alliance conceded in the seventh minute of injury time against ProStars.
Master’s FA face a tough tie against TFC Academy in the Men’s Championship, and Windsor City host North Mississauga – two teams with a single point on the board.
Every Point Matters
With home and away fixtures, smaller divisions, and promotion and relegation, every point matters even this early in the season.
Looking to add to their strong start in the Women’s Premier are North Toronto, currently second in the standings. They take on Woodbridge Strikers, who won this encounter 2-1 in 2023.
Vaughan Azzurri are also aiming for their second win on the bounce as they face Guelph United, who are having a tough start to the new Premier Division having faced NDC Ontario last week.
Blue Devils were put to the sword by Alliance last week, so they will be aiming to quickly banish any ghosts from the opening weekend with a solid performance against FC London.
There are four Men’s Premier Division games on Sunday, including Woodbridge Strikers against North Toronto which will be broadcast live on the League1 Ontario YouTube channel.
Burlington, who gained three points last week through some spectacular heroics by striker Augustus Oku, face Sigma who were eventually broken down by Scrosoppi in their opening game.
Scrosoppi, meanwhile, take part in a heavyweight battle against two-time champions Blue Devils, and two former title-winners, Vaughan Azzurri and Guelph United, meet at 8pm on Sunday as they both look to stay unbeaten in the division. That’s something to look forward to for Sunday night!
