Weekend Preview: Momentum the key to success
Following last week’s double matchweek, it is go time again in L1ON as the likes of Alliance and Simcoe look to extend their leads in the top tiers.

A chance to go top
NDC Ontario have a chance to leapfrog Simcoe at the summit of the Women’s Premier on Friday when they face North Toronto. In a clash between second and fourth, the hosts can pile the pressure on the current league leaders before they play Woodbridge two days later.
In the Men’s Championship, it is a battle between the bottom two as Windsor City host Hamilton United. The home side enjoyed a 1-0 win at Hamilton on Wednesday, but the latter are winless at this stage, so they need a positive result on the road to kickstart their season and move level on points with their opponents.
Bounce-back ability
On Saturday, Alliance United will be looking to reignite their title fight in the Men’s Premier following their defeat to Scrosoppi last week. They travel to Burlington on Saturday in a bid to extend their lead over Woodbridge, who currently sit one point behind but have three spare games. Burlington can make it two consecutive wins with a victory.
Scrosoppi continue their title defence at 8:30pm as they travel to FC London. The visitors looked to be struggling at one stage, but with two wins from their last three, they sit six points from top with three games in hand. FC London, however, are still aiming to move away from the foot of the standings.
The top two are in action in the Men’s Championship as Master’s FA look to go ahead of Sudbury Cyclones. Master’s travel to Whitby in the earlier kick-off, so could be top ahead of Sudbury’s game. These sides met just two weeks ago, with Master’s winning 2-1, so they will be looking to replicate that result.
The Cyclones will hope that the home crowd will help to secure them a vital three points when they host Waterloo United. The pressure is slightly less on them, as they will still have a game in hand on Master’s after this weekend.
Waterloo thrashed Sudbury 5-0 last week, handing the league leaders their first defeat of the season. Could the visitors get another against-the-odds victory today to boost their chances of promotion in the second-half of the season?

There are solitary games in the Women’s Premier and Championship, as North Mississauga host Guelph United in the former, and Hamilton United travel to Burlington in the second tier.
In the hunt
The race for promotion from the Men’s and Women’s Championships continues to heat up each week, and this Sunday should be no less interesting.
Should either Master’s or Sudbury slip up the day before, The Borough will be keen to capitalize against North Mississauga at Birchmount Stadium. The hosts are just four points away from the top, so a win against a struggling side would be very welcome.
Guelph United are quietly going about their business, sitting six points away from first place but with two games in hand. On Sunday, they travel to York United Academy, a side who could break into the promotion fight with a win.
In the women’s second tier, Pickering can move ahead of Scrosoppi, who are out of action, with a result at Unionville Milliken. The visitors sit one point behind the league leaders.
Whitby could also end up top by Sunday night if they claim maximum points at home to Oakville. They are currently level on points with Pickering after playing one fewer game, so promotion will be on their minds if they come away with three points this weekend.
Title chasing
They may be four points away by the time they play, but Woodbridge Strikers could also be top of the Men’s Premier by Sunday night. They travel to St Catharines Roma Wolves in the early kick-off, and three points will be the only aim as they remain hot on the heels of Alliance.
Elsewhere, Simcoe host North Toronto in a bid to make it two wins in three days after their Thursday match, and Vaughan Azzurri travel to Sigma following their 2-2 home tie with Oakville in midweek.
In the women’s top tier, Simcoe can make it four wins in the space of ten days if they beat Woodbridge on Sunday. They could be second by the time they play, but beating their seventh-placed opponents would continue their perfect form, especially after their win in the L1 Cup.
Vaughan Azzurri currently sit in third place, slightly outside the top-two battle, but a positive result against Alliance would bring them into the title conversations. Alliance have won just one of their ten matches so far, so they need a solid result here.
North Toronto are also in with a shout of title success, and they host FC London to tie up Sunday’s top-tier action.
Pickering travel to North Milliken in the men’s second tier, and Tecumseh host Rush Canada Academy in the Women’s Championship to conclude the matchweek.
Back on track
Cambridge United had won six consecutive League2 Division matches in the Men’s Southwest Conference, but a 2-0 loss to St Catharines last week hindered their progress. Their opponents leapfrogged them into first place, but they can find their form again if they beat Windsor City on Saturday. Elsewhere, Railway City host Hamilton United.
On Friday, Rush Canada Academy continue their promotion push when they travel to Woodbridge Strikers in the Men’s Conference. In the Women’s Northeast Conference, Master’s host Simcoe on Friday, and Sudbury Cyclones travel to Whitby on Sunday.
Tying up the week, St Catharines host Rush Canada Academy in the Women’s Southwest Conference on Friday, and Cambridge United are on the road against Hamilton on Saturday. Sunday features one match, with Railway City serving as the home side for their game against Burlington.
