Weekend Preview: Promotion scrap in the Men’s Championship
Following a couple of matchweeks involving midweek games, the L1ON sides return to their usual weekend schedule, including a top-two clash in the Men’s Championship

Friday night lights
It is a busy start to Matchweek 11, especially in the Men’s second tier.
The action begins with Master’s FA’s trip to York United Academy, as both sides look to fight their way into the title battle. The visitors currently hold the upper hand in the standings, sitting three points ahead of their opponents, having played an extra game. A win for the hosts would put them level in third, with a chance to further move up the table.
Elsewhere, Waterloo United host Unionville Milliken in a bid to move ahead of their opponents. The gap between fourth and ninth is currently three points, so a win for any side sitting in mid-table could propel them up the standings and change their season. Both teams have struggled for consistency so far, but three points here could be huge.
Windsor City can make it three wins on the bounce with a home victory against North Mississauga. Their opponents are currently without a win in the same number of games, and the hosts could move further clear of the bottom with maximum points.
Whitby and Pickering have similar records so far this season and face each other to tie up the division’s action on Friday. They currently sit side-by-side in the standings, so this should be a close-fought affair.
There is a sole match in the Men’s Premier to conclude Friday, as St Catharines Roma Wolves host Simcoe County Rovers. The visitors could head into Saturday level on points with first place if they win, as the title fight continues for another week.
The top two clash
The entertainment continues in the Men’s Championship on Saturday when first-placed Sudbury Cyclones travel to The Borough, who sit four points behind them in second. The gap could be as big as seven points by the end of the week, but a win for the home side would make it very tense heading into Matchweek 12.
There are no men’s second-tier matches on Sunday, so the matchweek concludes with Hamilton United travelling to Guelph United in a bid to claim their first win of the season. With two points so far, wins need to start coming soon for the visitors if they are to rescue the season. For Guelph, a win would move them into the top-three fight.
The new league leaders in the Women’s Premier are back in action, with NDC Ontario travelling to Guelph United. The visitors moved into top spot last week with their win against Waterloo United, so the aim will be to extend their advantage.
FC London are still looking to move away from the bottom and have the opportunity to do so this weekend against North Mississauga. A home win could move them as high as seventh, with only two points separating them and Woodbridge Strikers.
There are also two matches in the Men’s Premier, as Scrosoppi look to continue their title defence fightback. They are on the road against Burlington, and a win would move them level with leaders Alliance, who play a day later.
North Toronto host FC London in a battle between the bottom two. There is a seven-point gap between the hosts and Sigma ahead of them in ninth, so only a win here would suffice for either side.
There is just one match on Saturday to kick off the Women’s Championship fixtures, as Rush Canada Academy host Scrosoppi. Only six points separate first and sixth in the second tier, and a win for the visitors would take them into Sunday at the summit of the standings.
Must-win games
The gap at the top of the Men’s Premier is just a point between Alliance United and Woodbridge Strikers, and both play on Sunday.
The current leaders host Oakville to begin the evening and need to pick up three points if they are to remain ahead of second. After looking like the runaway leaders at the beginning of the season, Alliance are without a win since the start of the month, so their goal this weekend is clear.
Woodbridge currently have three games in hand on Alliance, so a win at home against Sigma this matchweek could pile the pressure on at the top. If results go their way, the Strikers could be the new league leaders going into next week.
Hunted turned hunters
Simcoe County Rovers were looking comfortable at the top of the Women’s Premier, but after dropping points against Woodbridge last week they are having to hunt down NDC Ontario again. They travel to Alliance United on Sunday, where the gap could be as big as four points if NDC win the day prior.
Elsewhere, Woodbridge host fourth-placed North Toronto, and Vaughan Azzurri could be as high as second by the end of the week if they beat Waterloo and other results go their way.

Pickering are looking to go top of the Women’s Championship while Hamilton are out of action. They are the home side for their game against Tecumseh. The top three in the standings are all level on 18 points at this stage, so like most L1ON divisions at the moment, it is tense at the top.
To tie up the weekend, Oakville host Unionville Milliken.
Promotion pushing
Railway City continue their hunt at the top of the Women’s Southwest L2 Conference on Thursday when they travel to Hamilton. The visitors are just two points away from Waterloo in first. On Saturday, St Catharines can also pile the pressure on at the top if they beat Oakville, and on Sunday, Cambridge United host Waterloo.
In the Northeast Conference, Sudbury Cyclones can make it three wins from four matches if they beat Unionville Milliken on Saturday. A day later, Master’s FA are the home side for their game against Scrosoppi.
There is just one game in the Men’s Southwest Conference, with Railway City playing Guelph United on Saturday. On the same day, Rush Canada Academy play North Toronto in the Central Conference.
