Weekend Preview: Scarborough Derby set for livestream

Attention turns to Matchweek Two which includes a first regular-season matchup between Scarborough’s clubs.

Premier Division Friday nights

After the League2 Divisions kicked off this week, action in the top two League1 Ontario tiers continues with Women’s Premier action on Friday.

Defending champions NDC Ontario host Alliance United to begin Matchweek Two. The home side started their campaign in perfect fashion with a 9-0 win against North Mississauga, and Alliance will have to contain Teegan Melenhorst who found the net four times last week.

The Men’s Championship is also in action, with Whitby and Hamilton United facing off at 8pm. Both sides have begun the season winless after Whitby’s tie with The Borough and Hamilton’s loss at North Mississauga.

Elsewhere, Pickering host Rush Canada Academy under the lights in the Women’s Championship with both teams looking for their first regular-season win of the year.

Championship livestreams

There will be two livestreamed games on Saturday, April 26, across the Men’s and Women’s Championship Divisions.

The first of these is in the men’s competition, with The Borough hosting Masters FA, two sides who avoided defeat in the opening week. Following their elevation from League2, the home side began their 2025 campaign with a tie against Whitby.

Masters could be a tough test, though, after last year’s fifth-place side began the year with a 1-0 win against Waterloo United. There are also bragging rights on offer with this being the first Scarborough derby in the Men’s Championship.

The other match live on YouTube is in the women’s second tier and sees Unionville Milliken against Burlington. The two sides finished next to each other in 2024, with Unionville in sixth, five points above Burlington in seventh. The former began 2025 with a 2-1 victory against Oakville, and Burlington begin their season this weekend.

Plenty of Saturday standoffs

The Men’s Championship dominates the Saturday schedule with three matches in the evening. North Mississauga and Unionville Milliken is a key matchup after both sides won 3-0 in Matchweek One, so they’ll go into this one full of confidence.

Aside from the previously mentioned The Borough, Sudbury Cyclones are also an elevated side from League2. They started the season with maximum points after their away win at York United Academy, and this weekend host last season’s bottom-side Pickering who tied their first match with Guelph United.

In the Women’s Championship, Hamilton United host Tecumseh United – another two teams looking for their first regular-season victories.

There are also two games in the Women’s Premier Division and a sole matchup in the men’s top tier on Saturday.

North Mississauga against Vaughan Azzurri are the two sides at the bottom of the Women’s Premier standings after the opening matchweek. Mississauga are the hosts and both will be aiming to put their first defeats of the season firmly in the past.

Simcoe County Rovers took all three points last week against 2024 runners-up FC London, and they travel to North Toronto for their second game of 2025. The hosts finished third last season and started this year with a thrilling 3-3 tie against Guelph United.

The single game in the Men’s Premier on Saturday is between the newly-promoted St Catharines Roma Wolves and North Toronto.

A busy Sunday

All Premier and Championship Divisions are in action on Sunday, April 27. Although most leagues have one game, the Men’s Premier is set to have a busy night.

The evening begins with Simcoe County Rovers hosting Burlington, two sides that both lost in the opening weekend. The teams swapped results in 2024, with Burlington winning 2-1 away from home before Simcoe won 4-0 on the road. Following a disappointing start to 2024 for both, this is one to keep an eye on as they hunt their first points of the new season.

Woodbridge Strikers begin their 2025 campaign when they host Oakville on Sunday. The latter took maximum points from Matchweek One after they beat Burlington through a Tyler Yasaka goal in the second half.

Elsewhere in the Men’s Premier, 2024 runners-up Vaughan Azzurri host Alliance United after their 4-1 win against St Catharines last week.

In the Women’s Premier, Woodbridge Strikers host Guelph United looking to build on their derby day win last week, while Scrosoppi travel to Oakville in the Championship.

Also on Sunday, Windsor City host Guelph United, and Waterloo United are on the road to York United Academy in the Men’s Championship.

There is one game on Monday, April 28, when Waterloo United take on FC London for their first win in their return to the Women’s Premier Division.
