Weekend Preview: Striding towards success

There are close title battles across League1 Ontario, as we look ahead to the penultimate matchweek in the women’s competitions.

Making the first move

The Women’s Premier matchweek began with Guelph United’s 1-0 home victory over Alliance United on Wednesday, and North Toronto are the first of the big hitters in action when they travel to Waterloo United on Friday, where a victory would move them to the summit ahead of the rest of the fixtures.

A day later, Simcoe County Rovers have the opportunity to respond in the title race when they face North Mississauga away from home. The visitors currently sit level with second-placed North Toronto and two points behind NDC Ontario in first, but still have an all-important game in hand heading into the final stages of the season.

Elsewhere, FC London play their final home game of 2025, facing Woodbridge Strikers. They will be hoping to end on a high in front of their fans after a disappointing campaign. With one win from 16, all eyes will be looking ahead to a better 2026 campaign potentially in the Women’s Championship.

Finally, Sunday sees the current league leaders in action as NDC Ontario host Vaughan Azzurri. NDC are at the summit heading into the weekend but they could find themselves as low as third by the time they play.

Up for grabs

There are only three points between first and fifth in the Women’s Championship as those chasing Hamilton United approach their final two matches of the season. Friday starts with Scrosoppi’s visit to Burlington where a win for the away side would move them onto 27 points and to the summit of the division.

A day later, it is fourth vs fifth as Tecumseh United travel to Whitby. This match could make or break either team’s season; a victory for Tecumseh would put them well in the mix for a promotion spot. Whitby are currently just outside the top four so a three points for them would be crucial heading into the final matchweek.

Elsewhere, leaders Hamilton can cement themselves as promotion favourites with a win against Rush Canada Academy. Three points, plus their spare match, would mean it would take a huge slip-up in the final games for them to move down the standings.

There is one fixture on Sunday to conclude the division’s penultimate weekend, with Oakville hosting Pickering. The visitors start this round of games in second but could find themselves in fourth by the time they play, so their destiny is in their own hands if they are to qualify for the Pro/Rel Playoff.

Daylight at the top

Sudbury Cyclones have earned some breathing space in the Men’s Championship and now sit seven points clear at the top of the standings following a 2-0 win at Pickering on Wednesday.

North Mississauga can make it two wins in this matchweek when they host Whitby on Friday night. The hosts overcame Unionville Milliken on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory, and their attention now turns to the weekend as they look to climb into the top half and the promotion battle.

It is a busy Saturday which starts with The Borough’s visit to Pickering. The hosts sit ninth but only seven points away from their opponents in third, so the standings are still wide open for any side that can begin a winning run. Three points for The Borough would be crucial as they have a game in hand on York United Academy above them.

The league-leading Cyclones are back in action when they host Unionville Milliken, who looked to be picking up real momentum until their defeat on Wednesday, but a victory would move them right back into contention.

York could find themselves as low as fifth by the time they travel to Hamilton United on Saturday night, although they have picked up great form recently with just two home defeats all season helping them reach the runners-up spot. They will need to be at their best again and avoid any complacency against the side who sit bottom without a win in 2025.

Saturday’s other game sees Waterloo United, coming in off a defeat to York on Wednesday, host Guelph United. Sunday’s match sees Master’s FA look to join the promotion fight with a win against Windsor City.

Comfortable at the summit

Woodbridge Strikers showed no signs of slowing down at the top of the men’s top tier on Wednesday when they beat Burlington 4-0 away from home. Ronaldo Marshall’s brace alongside goals from Luca Pinto and Justin Cicchillo gave them all three points. The league leaders’ attention now turns to Sunday when they host Vaughan Azzurri.

On Saturday, though, second-placed Scrosoppi will be looking to reduce the gap to the top with a victory at home to Oakville. Their opponents won’t be an easy task as they are riding a wave after their 2-1 road win over Vaughan Azzurri in midweek.

North Toronto will be aiming to finish the season on a high following a disappointing campaign, and they host Burlington at 7:30pm. Kicking off 30 minutes later, FC London travel to St Catharines Roma Wolves.

Simcoe County Rovers, who sit level on 27 points with Scrosoppi, are on the road against Sigma on Sunday, as they look to chase down Woodbridge. They enjoyed a 1-0 win against FC London on Wednesday so will be aiming to make it a perfect week.

Relentless in front of goal

Rush Canada Academy were the headline team in League2 in midweek as they stormed to an 11-0 victory against North Mississauga to conclude the Men’s Central Conference.

In the Southwest Conference this weekend, Railway City travel to FC London in their final match of the year and Cambridge United host St Catharines as they prepare for the postseason.

Master’s FA host Pickering in the Women’s Northeast Conference on Friday night, then on Sunday, they travel to Unionville Milliken. Saturday sees Sudbury Cyclones on the road to face Vaughan Azzurri.
