Weekend Preview: Top two face off in the Premier Divisions
How have the midweek matches impacted the title races ahead of this weekend’s fixtures? Find out in our latest preview.

Extending the advantage
The biggest winners of the matchweek so far are Sudbury Cyclones in the Men’s Championship, who have increased their lead at the top to six points. The Cyclones beat York United Academy 2-0 on Wednesday, shortly after their challengers could only tie 1-1 with Whitby.
The league leaders now carry their win into Sunday when they travel to Windsor City in a bid to further increase their chances of securing the title. The Borough are still in the promotion hunt and host Waterloo United.
Unionville Milliken are firmly on the heels of The Borough ahead of them and can make it two wins in a matter of days when they travel to Whitby. The visitors beat Windsor City 2-0 on Tuesday and could move into second by the end of the weekend.
Pickering are another side who could achieve six points from six if they defeat York United Academy. They comfortably won on the road on Tuesday against Guelph United and sit eighth with four victories so far. Master’s FA also enjoyed their Tuesday evening, winning 3-0 at Waterloo United, but they are out of action this weekend.
There was one other match in the week, which saw North Mississauga beat Hamilton United 5-1 at Redeemer University. Hamilton are out of action this weekend while North Mississauga are on the road against Guelph United.
Set to be a tense weekend
Alliance United had held onto top spot for a long time in the Men’s Premier, but after the abundance of midweek matches they slipped down to second. They were firmly beaten by Vaughan Azzurri on Wednesday in a 3-0 defeat, but will be hunting the summit again this weekend when they travel to Woodbridge Strikers, the new league leaders.
The Strikers did not need to win to move into first place – a 1-1 tie with Oakville in the week was enough to take them above Alliance. Sunday is set to be a huge day in the title fight and Woodbridge could firmly cement themselves as the favourites to be champions.
Scrosoppi are still well in the hunt to defend their title, and they are on the road against Vaughan Azzurri on Sunday. Following a late 2-1 win against Sigma on Wednesday, another victory this weekend could see them move level at the summit.
There was one match on Tuesday, which saw Simcoe County Rovers defeat Burlington 2-1 at Ron Joyce Stadium. The latter are back in action in Saturday’s only game when they travel to FC London. Simcoe play a day later against Oakville and are currently sitting in third, so they could challenge for the title if they earn another three points this weekend.
The final midweek match was an entertaining one when St Catharines Roma Wolves won 4-3 away from home against North Toronto. The Wolves don’t have a Sunday match, but their opponents can put a close defeat behind them against Sigma – an important clash between two teams potentially facing the Pro/Rel Playoff.
Another top-two clash
NDC Ontario and Simcoe County Rovers continue their title fight in the Women’s top tier under the lights on Friday night. Neither side featured in the week, and only one point separates them going into this all-important game.

Tuesday’s single match saw Alliance United and North Mississauga play out a 1-1 tie. Alliance can make it four games unbeaten on Sunday, hosting bottom side FC London, and North Mississauga play on Monday night against top-two hopefuls North Toronto, who are carrying a 5-0 midweek win against Vaughan Azzurri forward.
The Azzurri will be aiming to put that heavy defeat behind them in Sunday’s final game. They travel to Guelph United, who beat FC London 2-1 on Wednesday, and sit directly below them in the standings. Vaughan are now five points away from the top three, so they need to bounce back.
Sunday’s other game sees Woodbridge Strikers welcome Waterloo United.
Back on top
Scrosoppi temporarily held top spot in the Women’s Championship, but Pickering reclaimed it following Wednesday’s matches. The new league leaders enjoyed a 5-0 win on the road against Burlington while SFC could only manage a 3-3 tie at Unionville Milliken. They had equalized at 2-2 in the first minute of stoppage time, only to go behind again almost immediately, but Yasmin Castillo saved a point with time almost up.
Both sides are back in action on Saturday, with Pickering hosting Hamilton United in a bid to continue at the top. Scrosoppi do have a game in hand, but face Whitby this weekend, so they need three points to remain hot on Pickering’s heels. Their opponents have a quick turnaround having tied 1-1 at home to Rush Canada Academy on Thursday night.
Saturday also sees Tecumseh United look to move closer to the top three when they host Unionville Milliken. The home side are currently three points away from Hamilton in third, but the top two are going to take some catching at this stage in the promotion hunt. Unionville are also on 15 points but have played more matches.
The final game of the weekend involves Rush Canada Academy, who will be hoping to add to Thursday’s tie when they host Burlington.
The run-in
With only four matches remaining for Cambridge United in the Men’s League2 Southwest Conference, they can cement themselves as title favourites on Sunday with a win against FC London. A day earlier, Railway City travel to Windsor City.
In the Men’s Central Conference, Rush Canada Academy continue their promotion hunt on Sunday evening against Scrosoppi.
St Catharines host Railway City in the Women’s Southwest Conference on Friday night, when the latter will be looking to go top. A day later, Cambridge United travel to Rush Canada Academy.
To conclude League2 action, Sudbury Cyclones and Master’s FA face off in the Women’s Northeast Conference on Saturday
