Weekly Rewind: A Vaughan victory takes them top

There were some key battles at the top of the L1ON divisions over the weekend, as the Women’s Premier saw a new league leader.

Honours even on Friday

On an important Friday in the Women’s Championship, the top four were all in action as they hunted the top spots.

The weekend’s action began with Scrosoppi’s visit to second-placed Tecumseh United, who sat fourth and fifth before this match, respectively. The home side took the lead early on, thanks to Avery Comartin’s goal in the 20th minute, but the visitors fought back to snatch a point in the 89th minute through Karina Wrobel.

The other all-important match was between league leaders Pickering and third-placed Whitby, which also ended 1-1, with the away side going ahead through a Naya Cardoza goal. Whitby equalized on the half-hour mark, and the match remained level throughout to make it a Friday of ties in the Women’s second tier.

The other Friday action saw St Catharines Roma Wolves and Oakville tie 1-1 in the Men’s Premier. Tyler Yasaka put the visiting side in front after seven minutes, but a Jared Agyemang goal levelled the scores before half-time.

Opportunities taken at the top

It was a Saturday of league-leader action across the L1ON divisions.

The busiest division was the Women’s Premier, which began with defending champions NDC Ontario’s defeat at Alliance United. The away side had enjoyed a good start to 2025, sitting in the top three, but the hosts claimed their first win of the season thanks to goals from Ava Beckett, Sofia Ferrante, and Hannah Chown.

Elsewhere, Simcoe County Rovers lost their spot at the top of the standings following their tie with North Toronto. This one was always set to be interesting, with both sides in the top four before the matchweek. Kayla Briggs scored the game’s first goal to put the visitors ahead, but Ally Rowe made it level 12 minutes from time.

The final Women’s Premier match on Saturday was a 0-0 tie between FC London and Waterloo United.

In the Men’s Premier, Alliance extended their lead at the summit following a 4-2 home win against North Toronto. The hosts are still unbeaten at this stage and now move three points ahead of Woodbridge in second, who do have a game in hand. Maksym Kowal, Angelo Ventrella, Dariua Kerr-Cooper, and Kingsley Belele secured the points.

Elsewhere, Woodbridge were in action as they won late against a Simcoe side who were unbeaten in four. The match remained level throughout, before an Anthony Morano penalty in injury time secured all three points for the visitors. Woodbridge now have three wins and two ties from their five games, so they are putting pressure on at the top.

Sudbury Cyclones also extended their gap at the top of the Men’s Championship thanks to a 2-1 victory at Whitby. Jaiden Santo put the visitors 1-0 up after 13 minutes, before Blake Rosener doubled their lead. Cameron Roach’s goal 15 minutes from time was a consolation as the Cyclones continued their unbeaten start.

Waterloo claimed their second league win of the year thanks to a 4-0 win away at bottom side Hamilton. A first-half brace from Markell Saddler, and goals from Santiago Almada and Wesley Cain moved the visitors into eighth, while the home side remain winless.

Goals galore

It was a busy Sunday across all four L1ON divisions, with goals flying in.

The best spectacle of the day was Rush Canada Academy’s 6-5 win at Unionville Milliken in the Women’s Championship. Alyssa Stephenson put the visitors 2-0 up early, before the hosts turned the game around and made it 3-2. Rush Canada fought back, though, with an Isabella Mazzaferro brace, and goals from Ava Ticconi and Caitlyn Gratton secured the win in a thriller.

Elsewhere, Oakville enjoyed a 2-1 away win at Burlington. Mary Difonzo scored a first-half penalty to put the hosts ahead, but the visitors turned the game on its head through Sally Steinberg and Megan Austin.

There were four matches in the Men’s Championship, which saw a day of mixed results. The Borough enjoyed the best result of the day, winning 5-0 away at Unionville Milliken. Jourdan Spence, Christian Keshishian, Shayne Abrams, Joshua Gordon, and Adrian Mahoney made it a five-star Sunday for the visitors.

North Mississauga continued their title challenge with a 3-1 win at York United Academy, thanks to a brace from Will Homan and a goal from Cristiano Candelarsei. The visitors sit just three points behind leaders Sudbury.

Guelph United claimed their second win of the season against a Master’s side who had an opportunity to put pressure on at the top. A Pero Bandula goal in the first half gave the hosts maximum points at Centennial Bowl.

To conclude our Men’s Championship recap, Windsor City and Pickering played out a 1-1 tie with goals from Adam Shaikh and Moussa Tawil.

In the Men’s Premier, there was a big home win for title-chasing Vaughan Azzurri, who beat FC London 4-0 at North Maple Field. Ryan Robinson, Chris Campoli, Nick Spittle, and Gabriel Boakye kept the hosts within four points of the summit.

There was also Sunday success for Burlington, who enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Sigma. The teams sit side-by-side in the standings, but the former have now scored eight goals in their last two matches, so are looking to build some momentum and move up the standings.

There was more high-scoring action in the Women’s Premier when Guelph United beat Woodbridge Strikers in a 3-2 win. An Ida Miceli brace for the visitors brought the game level after Zoe Rowe and Violet Hipkin put the home side ahead, but Olivia Brown restored the lead in the 68th minute to give Guelph their second win of the season.

Big wins in L2

Railway City were in action on Saturday in the Men’s Southwest, and enjoyed a big 5-1 home win against Waterloo L2. The home side now sit third in the standings, six points away from the top.

Cambridge United also had a mighty weekend, beating Hamilton L2 8-1 away from home on Sunday to continue their perfect start.

In the Women’s Northeast, Master’s were beaten 6-1 at Pickering L2 on Friday, and Sudbury Cyclones lost 4-2 at home to Vaughan Azzurri L2. In the Southwest, Railway City won 6-0 at Rush Canada Academy L2, and Cambridge beat Guelph L2 2-0.
