It was a big weekend for Sigma, Scrosoppi, and Vaughan Azzurri, and Guelph are left to fight for their Premier place in their final game of the season.

Sigma secure survival

The Men’s Premier Division weekend started with Sigma’s key match against Guelph United, and the hosts’ 3-1 victory confirmed their place in the top tier for next season with Kevaughn Tavernier adding two goals to his growing tally.

The result condemned Guelph to the Pro/Rel Playoff against St Catharines Roma Wolves from the Men’s Championship, which will take place in September and be both sides’ last game in the 2024 season. Guelph secured their Premier spot for this campaign in their final game of 2023, and they’ll need to do it again if they are to compete among League1 Ontario’s best in 2025.

At the other end of the table, Scrosoppi grabbed another three points against Simcoe County Rovers, who suffered their first loss since late June. Talismen Jacob Carlos and Tomasz Skublak were on the scoresheet, and now each have nine goals for the season.

But leading the way in the standings are Vaughan Azzurri, who defeated North Toronto 8-0. It was the first time North Toronto had conceded eight in a regular-season matchup since Vaughan put them to the sword in 2021, marking a statement victory for the Azzurri who know they need every advantage they can get in order to pile the pressure on Scrosoppi who have games in hand in the divisional title race.

Vaughan and North Toronto meet again in the Men’s L1 Cup semifinals tonight, and fellow semifinalists Blue Devils won 4-1 against ProStars on Saturday. Three goals from substitute Sam Millward in the space of 10 second-half minutes sealed the deal for the Oakville side, with his last strike coming in the 88th minute, giving his team confidence ahead of their semifinal against Simcoe.

On Sunday, Burlington won for the first time this month, beating Alliance United 3-1; Leaford Allen netted his fourth goal of the season. Woodbridge Strikers were 6-2 victors against Hamilton United as Ronaldo Marshall put five goals past the division’s already-relegated side.

Men’s Championship concludes

Despite Windsor City versus BVB IA Waterloo not taking place, there was still plenty of action in the Men’s Championship on Friday.

Pickering needed a victory against already-promoted FC London to avoid the Pro/Rel Playoff against Men’s League2 repechage winners Scrosoppi B, but a professional second-half performance from London saw them win 3-0 despite the score being level at half-time.

Recently crowned Men’s Championship winners TFC Academy also did not take their foot off the pedal in their final game of the campaign, winning 8-1 against Darby with eight different scorers.

Sunday saw Master’s FA defeat North Mississauga 2-0 with goals from Adam Rombough and Daniel Avila. It was North Mississauga’s second match of the weekend having played out a thrilling 3-3 tie on Friday night against Unionville Milliken, who came back from 3-1 down with two late goals to ensure their positive season didn’t end with defeat.

Matchweek 18 concluded an incredibly exciting inaugural Men’s Championship season which saw some epic races at both ends of the standings. St Catharines Roma Wolves and Pickering will represent the division in the Men’s Pro/Rel Playoffs, starting this weekend.
