Winning runs, prolific performances, Reserve League Finals, and a title race going down to the last game; it’s all happening in League1 Ontario.
Standings complete
Friday’s only game from the women’s top tier saw champions NDC Ontario finish on a high as they saw off North Mississauga 4-0; Adriana Bianchin, Isabelle Chukwu, Teegan Melenhorst and Olivia Chisholm were all on the scoresheet for the hosts.
Sunday was when most of the final Women’s Premier action took place. FC London have finished second in the standings after a 3-0 win over Simcoe County Rovers with Lauren Rowe at the double for the hosts. Simcoe finish seventh in the standings as a result.
Elsewhere, Jade Kovacevic concluded her fantastic individual season with yet another goal; this time helping third-placed North Toronto beat Blue Devils 2-0, while Woodbridge Strikers ended the campaign with a flourish by winning 4-2 at Vaughan Azzurri – showcasing their goal-scoring prowess even without top scorer Samantha Murphy.
Guelph United made headlines in the final Women’s Premier game on Monday night as they beat Alliance United 7-1 to secure sixth in the standings. Victoria Hinchliffe was on hand with a hat-trick.
Deciding game
The Women’s Championship’s final matchweek has so far seen Burlington come away from Darby with all three points following a 4-2 win; Audrey Bernier with a brace for the visitors who finish seventh in the standings, while hosts Darby sit ninth at the season’s end.
There was a huge game at the bottom of the standings on Saturday, where a late strike from Tecumseh United’s Olivia Corazza was enough to seal a 1-0 win at Rush Canada, who needed a victory to avoid being relegated from the Women’s Championship.
Saturday’s action also saw Scrosoppi finish their inaugural women’s season in style; firing seven without reply past sixth-placed Unionville Milliken with Sahara Zingano providing three of those goals. The result sent Scrosoppi to the top of the standings and put pressure rivals BVB IA Waterloo.
Waterloo’s goalless tie with third-placed Hamilton United on Sunday means they must win at home to Unionville Milliken on Wednesday to finish top of the standings and win automatic promotion to the Premier Division.
ProStars made sure to finish the season with five wins in a row by beating Pickering 4-1 thanks in part to Teagan Handley’s brace.
All that remains is North Mississauga of the Women’s Premier Division facing the Championship runners up for a place in next season’s top tier. Details to be confirmed.
The business end
While the women’s divisions may be at its end, it’s still all to play for in the men’s top two tiers.
In the Men’s Premier Division, Scrosoppi followed up a 1-0 win over Hamilton United on Wednesday with a 4-0 demolition of Sigma on Saturday, meaning they sit top of the standings by two points. Elsewhere, Sam Ghouli’s strike four minutes after half-time was enough for Blue Devils to leave Burlington with a 1-0 win and move onto 25 points.
Sunday’s action from the men’s top tier saw second-placed Vaughan Azzurri beat ProStars 1-0 thanks to Reshaun Walkes’ 19th-minute goal, while Woodbridge Strikers lost ground in the title race after playing out a 1-1 tie with Alliance United. Simcoe County Rovers won 3-0 at winless Hamilton United in Sunday’s other game to stay fifth in the standings.
Another Fadi Salback goal was the difference in North Toronto’s Monda-night game against Guelph United, as the strikers second-half strike helped his side to a 2-1 win.
The Men’s Championship action got underway on Friday as St Catharines Roma Wolves continued their remarkable winning run with a resounding 4-1 success at Darby; defender Luca Ragagnin on the scoresheet again for the hosts.
Elsewhere, Unionville Milliken now sit fourth in the standings after a 5-1 defeat at BVB IA Waterloo thanks to Logan Rieck’s hat-trick, while Cameryon Stewart’s brace helped North Mississauga to a 4-2 victory at bottom side Pickering.
Saturday and Sunday saw one game each, with Master’s FA dispatching Windsor City 2-0 and table-toppers TFC Academy winning 2-0 against title rivals FC London to go four points clear at the summit.
The final weekend of action from Men’s League2 saw Rush Canada and Sudbury Cyclones win, both coming close to a wildcard playoff spot, while the Borough were defeated by Sigma B.
The Women’s League2 season also came to a close, with the division’s playoffs taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, followed by a final at Tim Hortons Field.
Reserve League Finals
Vaughan Azuzrri’s U20 men’s team were convincing winners in the Reserve League Final against North Toronto U20. It was a superb team performance that saw them lift the trophy, with Adriano Iannello adding the finishing touches with an injury-time brace.
The Women’s Reserve League Final was a similar story, as ProStars U20 scored four goals past Whitecaps London U20 to claim the crown, with three of their strikers coming in the second half. The final score was 4-1.
