Weekly Rewind: Champions defeated as Simcoe shine

Simcoe County Rovers secured a statement victory in the Women’s Premier on Saturday, and the race for promotion has already begun in the Championship divisions.

Tight at the top

Multiple teams in the Men’s Championship have continued their unbeaten starts as several teams sit joint top following the weekend’s matches.

On Friday, Whitby secured a convincing 4-1 home win against Waterloo United. The hosts went 4-0 up thanks to a brace from Erion Metaj, and goals from Mathias Warwick and Nigel Buckley, before Daniel Shooshan’s consolation.

Alongside them at the top are North Mississauga, who tied for the first time this season following two wins. Master’s FA were the visitors and equalized through a Lorenzo Mayer penalty after Thomas Kapustynski’s first-half opener.

This game also went towards the Men’s L1 Cup after the Round One fixture between these sides was abandoned. A penalty shootout prevailed with the teams level at full-time and North Mississauga came out on top to progress to the next round.

The third side on seven points in the Men’s Championship are Sudbury Cyclones, who hosted a 2-2 tie with Guelph United on Saturday following an entertaining first half. The visitors led twice through Cole Fernandez and Jack Sears, but Jaiden Santo and Caelan Walraven pegged them back.

Elsewhere on Friday, Pickering took a second-half lead against Hamilton United, but the away side equalized late on thanks to a penalty from Donart Beqiri.

There was a solo match in the Women’s Premier on Friday, when Waterloo United’s Marisa Oliveira scored a brace, coming from behind to take all three points against Woodbridge Strikers.

A super six on Saturday

North Toronto went to the top of the Women’s Premier on Saturday following a massive 6-0 win against North Mississauga. The hosts raced into an early lead through Trinity Esprit and Elise Bell. Esprit completed her brace after 15 minutes, before Jessie de Boer, Ashley Greco, and Lauren Rowe put the icing on the cake.

Simcoe County Rovers also made it a perfect Saturday, beating defending champions NDC Ontario 2-0. The hosts moved into second place thanks to Ally Rowe and Stefanie Young’s first-half goals.

The other Saturday game in the Women’s Premier was a 0-0 stalemate between FC London and Alliance United.

There was more action down the pyramid, as Tecumseh United went top of the Women’s Championship by beating Rush Canada Academy 2-1. The hosts took the lead, but goals from Jane Pozzi and Ava Mills ensured the points went to the visitors.

Pickering and Unionville Milliken tied 1-1 in the other fixture, with Serena McDonald equalizing late for Pickering after Tara Sisic’s early opener.

The Men’s Premier saw one match, which was Vaughan Azzurri’s 2-0 win away at FC London, and The Borough beat Windsor City 2-1 in the Men’s Championship to achieve their first win of the season.

Sunday scorers

It was a busy day in the Men’s Premier on Sunday, May 4, as four matches took place.

Oakville’s 3-1 home win against St Catharines Roma Wolves saw the hosts move on to six points. Brandon Duarte, Michael Maslanka, and Tyler Yasaka made it 3-0 before Judson Posthuma claimed a late consolation goal.

Elsewhere, Simcoe County Rovers and Woodbridge Strikers tied 1-1, with Anthony Aromatario’s stoppage-time penalty rescuing a point for the home side after Jacob Spizzirri’s first-half goal.

There was more late action when Leo Shrimpton’s stoppage-time penalty saved North Toronto from defeat against Alliance United. The latter led late after Maksym Kowal’s 76th-minute goal, but they could not hold onto the points in the end.

Burlington earned their first win of 2025 by beating Sigma 4-0 away from home. The four different scorers, Noah Macintyre, Monti Mohsen, Mohamed Al Shakman, and Amir Shirazi, ensured a convincing victory.

There was just one game in each of the other League1 Ontario divisions. In the Women’s Premier, Vaughan Azzurri claimed their second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Guelph United.

Oakville and Whitby tied 1-1 in the Women’s Championship, with both goals coming in the same minute from Sally Steinberg and Elizabeth Maione.

In the Men’s Championship, Unionville Milliken and York United Academy held each other to a 2-2 tie, with the hosts coming back from 2-0.

Then on Monday, a 75th-minute penalty from Donart Beqiri secured a point for Hamilton against Master’s in the men’s second-tier.

League2 winners

St Catharines Roma Wolves bagged three points in the women’s third tier against Hamilton United’s second team, but Master’s FA lost by the same scoreline to North Toronto L2.

Sudbury Cyclones’ women narrowly lost in a 4-3 thriller against Alliance United L2, and Cambridge United secured a 4-3 victory against Rush Canada L2 despite a late Rush goal.

Cambridge also won in Men’s League2 – a 2-1 victory over Windsor City L2 – after Railway City won 1-0 in midweek.
