Weekly Rewind: Daylight at the top

Woodbridge Strikers have put themselves a more comfortable position in the Men’s Premier, while some sides made it two wins in a matter of days.

Running clear

The weekend began in the men’s top tier on Saturday with Burlington defeating FC London 4-2 away from home. A Mohamed Al Shakman brace, alongside goals from Monti Mohsen and Amir Shirazi, gave the visitors their seventh win of 2025 and made amends for their Tuesday defeat to Simcoe County Rovers.

A day later, Woodbridge Strikers won the battle between the top two, beating Alliance United 1-0 thanks to a late Alban Boci goal. It looked to be ending goalless but with two minutes to play the hosts stole all three points to move clear of second place, still with three games in hand.

Scrosoppi also lost ground in the title race and could only tie at Vaughan Azzurri. The defending champions enjoyed a 2-1 win at Sigma on Wednesday but were unable to secure a second victory in a row, remaining in third place. They are now four points away from top, but their attention turns to the L1 Cup with a semifinal against North Toronto on Wednesday.

Sigma had been defeated by Scrosoppi in the week but they bounced back over the weekend with a 3-1 home win against North Toronto. Dante Ruddock fired the hosts into the lead in the first half, before Zayne Bruno doubled the advantage in injury time. Bilal Abou Reslan got one back with nine minutes left but Andrew Piccolo secured the win late on.

Simcoe missed out on the opportunity to move into second as they could only tie 1-1 at home to Oakville. A win would have moved them onto 26 points, but it nearly ended in defeat after Tyler Yasaka’s goal just before half-time. Ryley Wishart rescued a point in the 85th minute though.

Stalemate

NDC Ontario remained at the summit of the Women’s Premier following their Friday night game with second-placed Simcoe. It was goalless until almost the end, when Ailish Hennessy opened the scoring in the 87th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. However, in the fifth minute of injury time, Bryanna Caldwell rescued the point for Simcoe.

Two days later, fourth-placed Vaughan Azzurri were handed a 4-2 defeat at Guelph United, the side directly below them. Olivia Brown opened the scoring for Guelph, before a Sofia Mastracci brace turned the game on its head either side of half-time. Brown then scored her second and third to turn things around again before Zoe Rowe ensured that the home side secured maximum points.

Elsewhere, Woodbridge Strikers moved into seventh place with a 2-1 win against Waterloo. All the goals came in the first half, with Meghan McKye making it 1-0 within two minutes. Marisa Oliveira equalized for Waterloo a couple of minutes later, but Maria Poveda scored the eventual winner in the 23rd minute.

Sunday finished with a 1-1 tie between Alliance United and FC London. After Adaira Nakano’s opener for London, there was more late drama as Madinah Assaf equalized in the third minute of stoppage time. Chelsea Burk had been dismissed midway through the second half for London, after receiving her second yellow card.

The matchweek finished on Monday night with North Toronto’s 4-0 win at North Mississauga.

Leaders defeated

Sudbury Cyclones are still top of the Men’s Championship as they chase the title and promotion, but they were comfortably beaten 3-0 at Windsor City on Sunday. In only their second defeat of 2025, Brent Nanchoff, Songmafolo Coulibay, and Jefferson Bosiakali’s goals meant the lead at the top was reduced to just three points again.

Behind them, The Borough made the most of Sudbury’s defeat with a 2-1 win at home to Waterloo United. Following a tie in midweek, the hosts could have been nine points from top after the weekend, but are still hot on the heels of Sudbury thanks to Jourdan Spence and Shayne Abrams. The gap to third below is only two points, though, so the automatic promotion race is certainly on.

Unionville Milliken are the side chasing the top two, and they enjoyed their Sunday with a 3-1 win at Whitby. A George Akpabio brace and Alex Lewis’ goal gave the visitors all three points as they continue to hunt down second place with a game in hand.

York United Academy put their midweek defeat behind them on Sunday when they beat Pickering 2-1 at York Lions Stadium. Ryan Giovannini and Malek Aborig gave the hosts their sixth win of the year, to move to within four points of third. They are still six points from a promotion place, though, so must continue winning.

The final game from the men’s second tier saw Guelph United and North Mississauga play out a 2-2 tie. It was another match with an entertaining first half as the visitors fought from behind twice. Milan Beader and Gray Yates’ penalty put the hosts ahead, but Thomas but Thomas Kapustynski and Myro Zastavnyy equalized.

A winless top two

Neither of the promotion front-runners could find a victory in the Women’s Championship on Saturday.

Pickering still hold top spot despite being beaten 3-1 at home by Hamilton United. Carolina Grzesniak equalized for the hosts after Brynn Jurus’ opener, but Madison Paige Goertz and Eden Hooper handed the league leaders just their third defeat of the season so far and Hamilton continued their winning form.

Behind them, Scrosoppi failed to take full advantage of Pickering’s defeat as they could only tie with Whitby. It was goalless at St Francis Xavier, but SFC will still be confident they can secure promotion as they have a game in hand on Pickering, although they need to pick up wins to stay ahead of Hamilton.

Hamilton are now four points behind the leaders Pickering with three games in hand, so with six wins on the bounce, have they become the new Women’s Championship favourites?

Elsewhere, it was goals galore in Tecumseh as they beat Unionville Milliken 4-3 at St Clair College. The hosts held a 3-1 lead at half-time following goals from Michaela Marenchin, Claire Pozzi, and Savannah Baillargeon. Marenchin made it 4-2 late on before Unionville bagged a consolation.

The final L1ON game of a busy week saw Burlington beat Rush Canada 3-2 away from home. A Della Weir brace for the home side was not enough as Mariana Orozco scored alongside penalties from Annemieke Hermans and Sienna Caesar to give Burlington all three points.

Moving closer

Cambridge United edged ever closer to winning the Men’s Southwest L2 Conference on Sunday by beating FC London 4-0 at home, to go four points clear of second with three games remaining. Their high points tally also confirms their qualification for the playoffs as the worst they can finish is as the leading second-placed side in the division.

Railway City’s visit to Windsor City was postponed a day earlier. Also on Sunday, Rush Canada Academy beat Scrosoppi 1-0 in the Central Conference.

On Friday, Railway City enjoyed a win on the road in the Women’s Southwest Conference, as they beat St Catharines Roma 1-0 and confirmed their place in the playoffs.

A day later, Cambridge United won 5-1 at Rush Canada Academy, and Sudbury Cyclones defeated Master’s FA in the Women’s Northeast Conference.
