Daylight at the top

Woodbridge Strikers’ lead at the summit of the Men’s Premier had been slowly diminishing ahead of Matchweek 17, but the weekend’s results mean they now have a bit more breathing space.

The week’s action began on Friday night with an entertaining match as Alliance United claimed a 4-3 win at St Catharines Roma Wolves. The visitors had a 4-1 lead heading into the final stages, thanks to goals from Quinton Chung, Atchu Sivananthan, Colin Pate, and Maksym Kowal. Ronaldo Homenszki and Jared Agyemang scored late but St Catharines could not complete the comeback.

A day later, Scrosoppi’s title hopes were dented as they dropped points at North Toronto. They could have moved to within one point of the summit ahead of Sunday, and Miles Green’s goal looked to have done just that, but Cyrus Rollocks saved a point for the home side three minutes into stoppage time.

While it’s certainly a point gained for North Toronto against a high-flying team, it wasn’t enough to keep them in the race to avoid the Pro/Rel Playoff with Sigma too far in front.

Sunday was a busy one with the headline result being Woodbridge’s 7-1 victory over FC London. Anthony Morano was the star of the show as he found the net four times, alongside a Justin Cicchillo brace and a Leandro Stalteri goal, to secure a much-needed three points for the league leaders.

Oakville moved closer to a top-four finish with a 2-0 win at Sigma; Tyler Yasaka and Brandon Duarte were the scorers as they secured their seventh victory of 2025. Vaughan Azzurri also enjoyed a 2-0 victory, defeating Burlington on the road for their third win on the bounce in all competitions.

Sudbury slip up

Men’s Championship leaders Sudbury Cyclones will be looking over their shoulders after this matchweek with only three points now separating them from Unionville Milliken in third.

Master’s FA handed the Cyclones their third defeat of 2025, with Aidan O’Keeffe scoring the only goal of the game to give the hosts maximum points. Second-placed The Borough are only two points behind Sudbury now as the race for promotion continues to heat up.

Friday was a day of 1-1 ties with Waterloo and Windsor City’s game ending level, and Pickering earning a point at North Mississauga.

York United Academy survived a late scare in their 3-2 victory against Whitby. Luca Accettola and a Malek Aborig brace fired the home team into a 3-0 lead, before Nigel Buckley scored twice for the visitors to set up a nervous ending to the game. York held on, though, and moved within a win of the summit.

The weekend concluded with Unionville Milliken’s big 4-1 win at Hamilton United. Osman Hussein and George Akpabio gave the visitors a 2-0 lead within nine minutes, and they both scored again in the second half to mean Michael Ciarmoli’s goal was just a consolation for Hamilton.

Status secured

FC London and Hamilton United battled for a place in the women’s top tier on Friday, with the former winning a penalty shootout to retain their spot in the division for 2026.

Hamilton had taken the lead through a Jaya Lecky spot-kick before Gabby Kohut equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Giuliana Marra and Kohut scored the only penalties of the shootout with Samantha St. Croix shining between the sticks for FC London came out victorious.

Promotion party

Cambridge United’s women celebrated their promotion on Sunday following a 2-1 win at Railway City. The hosts took the lead thanks to a Thalia Lievano goal, but Anastasia Kraja scored a brace for Cambridge to turn the game on its head and seal their spot in the Women’s Championship for next season.
