Weekly Rewind: Simcoe lift Women’s Premier and Scrosoppi promoted

The women’s divisions have reached their conclusions with Simcoe County Rovers and Scrosoppi securing the titles on the final weekend.

Secured in style

Simcoe County Rovers secured their first Women’s Premier title in style on Saturday with a 5-0 win against Vaughan Azzurri. Ally Rowe’s hat-trick moved her goal tally to 24 to end a successful season, while Stefanie Young and Teagan Handley also got in on the action as the silverware went to Simcoe.

North Toronto went into Saturday with hopes of a Simcoe slip-up after their 3-1 victory over Alliance United on Friday night. Ashley Campbell finished the year with another brace, ending the campaign on 14 goals, alongside Elise Bell’s first-half finish.

NDC Ontario were unable to claim the title with Simcoe winning, and were beaten at home by an FC London side who secured their third victory of 2025. In an entertaining game, the visitors scored late through Lindsey Barwitzi and Ivy Caskanette to steal the points.

It saw London end a difficult regular season on a high, with victory ensuring they avoided automatic relegation to the Women’s Championship and earned a chance for survival in the Pro/Rel Playoff, leaving Women’s L1 Cup finalists Alliance United in the dreaded drop zone.

North Mississauga and Woodbridge Strikers tied 2-2 to finish their campaigns. Cat Rogers gave the Strikers the lead twice but Mara Sanauceanu and Amanda Cripps fought back to secure a point.

There was one match on Monday, between Guelph United and Waterloo United, to conclude another year in the Women’s Premier. Guelph’s Zoe Rowe ensured her goal tally reached double digits, before teammate Esmeralda Torres scored to make it a 2-1 win.

Promotion party

Scrosoppi were also celebrating end-of-season success after a 2-1 win at Pickering on Sunday secured their place in the Premier Division for 2026. Pickering had taken the lead through Hollie Babut scoring deep into first-half injury time, but even deeper into the additional minutes, Aalayah Lully equalized. Yasmin Castillo then won the game in the 86th minute to seal promotion.

Hamilton United ensured they will be in the Pro/Rel Playoff after a 5-0 home win against Unionville Milliken on Saturday. Chiamaka Omeze scored a hat-trick alongside Chiara Nicolazzo and Niyah Noel-Gordon’s goals to set up a meeting with FC London.

Oakville narrowly missed out on a shot at promotion even after defeating Tecumseh United 2-0. Sally Steinberg and Alena Spehar scored to claim the win but Oakville ultimately finished third, three points away from second.

Burlington ended their campaign with a 3-2 home victory over Whitby. Mikaela Carpino, Mary Elizabeth Difonzo, and Kianna Logan fired the hosts into a three-goal lead before Alicia Tamburro scored twice for Whitby, but it was not enough to stage a comeback as these teams finished ninth and fifth, respectively.

Chasing the summit

The gap at the top of the Men’s Premier has been reduced to three points after the weekend’s action with Scrosoppi moving to within striking distance of Woodbridge after a 3-1 win at Oakville. Nathaniel Susnik, Tomasz Skublak, and Orlendis Benitez Hernandez all struck to move their side onto 34 points.

Woodbridge had a major slip-up later in the day, going down 4-0 at Vaughan Azzurri. The home side were relentless in front of goal and had Ethan Beckford, Jacob Begley, Mathieu Laurent, and Chris Campoli to thank for finding the net. With a handful of matches remaining, including one between Scrosoppi and Woodbridge, the title race is heating up.

Saturday saw Sigma move onto 21 points after a 3-0 victory at Simcoe County Rovers. Lee Victor Massunda, Sefunmi Taiwo, and Dante Ruddock all found the net in an impressive road win.

Elsewhere, there was late drama at FC London as they equalized with eight minutes to play against St Catharines Roma Wolves. Antonio Agovski had opened the scoring in the 77th minute but Santiago Fonseca levelled it five minutes later to earn a point.

North Toronto were beaten away from home in Sunday’s other match, which saw Burlington move onto eight wins for the season with a 3-2 victory. Karl Espiro, Dusan Kovacevic, and Xavier Enakimio struck to secure maximum points.

Hunting a playoff spot

Sudbury Cyclones still have a five-point lead at the top of the men’s second tier but could only tie with Master’s FA on Friday evening. The game ended goalless, giving those behind the opportunity to chase.

York United Academy missed the chance to close in on Sudbury after a 3-0 defeat at Whitby. Nigel Buckley scored a brace and Glodi Kabuya struck late to secure the comfortable win for Whitby, leaving York six points away from the summit but still a single point from the Pro/Rel Playoff place.

Friday finished with Windsor City’s 3-1 home win against Waterloo United. The away team took the lead in the first half through Sam Barrowcliffe, but Seve Oglan, Brent Nanchoff, and Ottavio Liburdi turned the game on its head.

Saturday saw one match, with Pickering and North Mississauga tying 2-2 at Pickering Soccer Centre. Ayomide Abobare fired the hosts into the lead to make it 1-0 at half-time, but a Christian Krzyzanowski brace turned things around. John Moncada levelled the scores with 12 minutes remaining.

There were two games on Sunday to conclude the matchweek, which included The Borough boosting their promotion hopes with a 4-3 victory over Guelph United. Ryan Silverstein, Jurgen Rustemi, Jourdan Spence, and Derrick Londono Zapata found the net in an entertaining match.

There was more goalscoring drama in Unionville, who beat Hamilton United 5-3 at Centennial College. A Jonah Banks brace for the hosts kept their promotion dreams alive with the race for a Premier Division spot closing in on its climax.
