Weekly Rewind: Title hunts on track and stunning comebacks

There were some high-scoring matches across Matchweek Seven of the L1ON season, while new leaders have taken over in the Women’s Premier.

Slip-ups and eye-catching scorelines

The gameweek began with the tide changing at the top of the Women’s Premier as Vaughan Azzurri lost their lead in the standings.

The Azzurri kicked off the seventh matchweek of 2025 with a trip to Waterloo United, and a 1-0 defeat was not the result they were aiming for. The visitors went into the week top of the table but after Sophia Cabral’s third goal in five games, they were knocked off their perch.

The team behind them and making the most of Azzurri’s misfortune were defending champions NDC Ontario, who won 5-3 at home against Guelph United. The hosts were 3-0 up after 51 minutes through Melisa Kecic, Emma Reda, and Bryana Gaynor. Olivia Rizakos and Olivia Brown scored for the visitors, but Gabby Istocki and Kennedy Belfon secured the points.

To tie up Friday, Sudbury Cyclones continued their unbeaten run in the Men’s Championship after a 1-1 tie at North Mississauga. Before this game the two sides sat in the top two, but Timi Aliu’s equalizer for Sudbury Cyclones after Ian Ferguson’s opener knocked the hosts out of the top three.

All square

It was a day of ties across L1ON on Saturday, but one outlying division saw some big wins.

Rush Canada Academy enjoyed their second win of the Women’s Championship season with a 5-2 home victory over Hamilton United. The visitors took the lead after Nikolina Rupcich’s own goal, but a Caitlyn Gratton hat-trick and goals from Alyssa Stephenson and Della Weir put the hosts 5-1 up. Chiara Nicolazzo’s 58th-minute goal was purely a consolation.

It was also a five-star performance from Scrosoppi when they beat Burlington 5-1 at St. Francis Xavier. Aalayah Lully’s brace, alongside goals from Yasmin Castillo, Jahkaya Davis, and Julia Bullock, gave the hosts their third victory of 2025.

Elsewhere across the divisions, it was a day of two points dropped for some, but potentially huge results for others. In the Men’s Premier, Simcoe County Rovers came back to tie 2-2 at Alliance United, who still sit top of the standings. Darius Kerr-Cooper and Jordy Sindjui-Sibopa put Alliance 2-0 up in the first half, but Shawn Claud Lawson’s brace completed the fightback to rescue a point.

Neither Sigma nor St Catharines Roma Wolves could find a winner in their game, which ended 1-1 at Hamilton Stadium. Diego Rivera opened the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes, but Sebastian Castello levelled 10 minutes later.

There was just one match in the Men’s Championship on Saturday, which also ended level. It was an entertaining one, though, as Guelph United and Whitby played out a 2-2 tie. Nicholas Brown made it 1-0 for Whitby after seven minutes, before Milan Beader and Jack Sears turned the game on its head, and Nigel Buckley’s penalty brought it level again.

The Women’s Premier also had a sole match, with North Mississauga and FC London’s match ending goalless.

Late winners and exciting comebacks

It was a very busy Sunday across the divisions, with an abundance of goals and big results.

In the Men’s Championship, Master’s FA’s 2-1 win over Unionville Milliken was the first of three identical results in the competition. The former took the lead through John Ribeiro, before Abubakar Hussein equalized seven minutes later. Master’s retook the advantage thanks to Lorenzo Mayer, to give them their third win of 2025.

The highest-scoring game of the day was at York United Academy in their back-and-forth 3-3 tie at Windsor City. Anthony Umanzor made it 1-0 to York United after four minutes, before Songmafolo Coulibay levelled it up nine minutes later. A Lucas Vidrascu own goal put the visitors 2-1 up, and Carlos da Gloria made it 3-2 after Davin Chhoeun’s equalizer. Cameron da Silva rescued a point for the hosts in injury time.

There were also 2-1 wins for Waterloo United and The Borough, who beat Pickering and Hamilton, respectively. Both winning sides ensured they ended the week in the top five, with The Borough maintaining their title challenge in second place.

In the Men’s top tier, North Toronto won a 4-3 thriller away at Vaughan Azzurri. A dramatic first half ended 2-2 following Abdul Babawale’s brace cancelling out goals by Ryan Robinson and Chris Campoli. Robinson completed his brace with nine minutes to play, but Cyrus Rollocks got two of his own to take all three points for North Toronto.

Elsewhere, FC London also enjoyed away success by beating Oakville 2-1. Samer Hamade opened the scoring for the hosts, but Bai Essa Coker’s mixed second half won the game, with two goals before his red card, as London claimed their first victory of the season.

To conclude Men’s Premier action, Woodbridge Strikers missed out on the opportunity to move within a point of the top after tying 2-2 with Scrosoppi. Anthony Aromatario and Anthony Morano turned the game on its head after Elton Nyumah’s opener for Scrosoppi, but Omari Cotterell saved a point in stoppage time.

North Toronto had a perfect Sunday in the Women’s Premier, beating Woodbridge Strikers 5-0 to move to within a single point of first place, and Simcoe County Rovers went to the top of the standings after they won 2-0 against Alliance United.

There were 2-0 away Women’s Championship wins for Oakville and Whitby, who beat Pickering and Tecumseh, respectively. In a day of matches between the top four, Whitby and Pickering ended up in the top two, but there are only two points between first and fifth place.

Wins in L2

On Sunday, Cambridge United continued their perfect season in the Men’s Southwest Conference, making it six wins from six after beating Railway City 2-1. In the Central Conference, Rush Canada Academy claimed their second win of 2025 with a huge 6-1 victory over Woodbridge Strikers.

In the Women’s Northeast Conference, Sudbury Cyclones were beaten 2-1 by Whitby, and in the Southwest Conference, St Catharines enjoyed a 5-0 away win over Burlington, making it three wins from four in 2025.
