Weekly Rewind: Woodbridge Strikers and Unionville Milliken win men’s titles

The champions of the Men’s Premier and Championship were decided after a dramatic final matchweek in League1 Ontario.

Strikers celebrate after the storm

Woodbridge Strikers won their first Men's Premier Division title in the final matchweek of the 2025 season, with a 3-0 win at FC London last night. It was an evening for Anthonys in front of goal, with Anthony Khananisho opening the scoring and Anthony Morano netting a brace.

Their title rivals Scrosoppi had ended their season in perfect fashion with both the L1 Cup trophy, and an 8-0 win against North Toronto in the division – Orlendis Benitez Hernandez scoring a hat-trick in what was a very one-sided game to end their campaign.

They finished on 41 points and were top of the table for three nights after Woodbridge Strikers' final game against already-relegated FC London was postponed because of the storm.

A victory for Woodbridge would have been enough to leapfrog Scrosoppi and win the title, with a tie meaning Scrosoppi would be crowned on head-to-head records. But the Strikers were on form once again, earning their 13th victory of the season with a convincing win at Tricar Field, and adding the Men's Premier trophy to their two L1 Cup titles in 2015 and 2017.

Alliance United ensured they ended the season positively with a 3-2 victory against St Catharines Roma Wolves and finished third in the standings. Andy Zhang and Atchu Sivananthan gave Alliance a 2-0 lead early in the second half, before Ronaldo Homenszki and Jared Agyemang levelled for the Roma Wolves. Maksyn Kowal restored the advantage in the 76th minute.

Vaughan Azzurri were defeated in the L1 Cup Final in midweek but put that behind them to beat Burlington 4-0. Their goals came from Gabriel Boakye, Ethan Beckford, Jacob Gravina, and Andron Kagramayan as they ended up in sixth.

Vaughan only finished behind fifth-placed Oakville due to head-to-head records, as Oakville were beaten 3-1 by Sigma on the final day thanks to a Leaford Allen hat-trick.

Promotion secured

Unionville Milliken secured the Men's Championship title and automatic promotion on Sunday with a 3-1 victory at York United Academy. A George Akpabio brace from the penalty spot, alongside an Abubakar Hussein goal, meant they finished level on points with Sudbury Cyclones and claimed their Premier Division place for 2026 thanks to the number of games won this season.

The Borough had the opportunity to snatch automatic promotion with a double matchweek, but they needed Unionville Milliken to drop points against York. The Scarborough side played on Friday and beat Master's FA 3-1 on the road: Alex Kuszaj, Ryan Silverstein, and Alex Maadanian found the net.

Their second game was 3-3 tie at Windsor City. The visitors went into a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Alex Gharibo, Christian Keshishian, and Caellum Michael Gray, but Noah Pio's brace completed the comeback for Windsor, with The Borough already knowing they would be playing in the Pro/Rel Playoff following Unionville's win.

The matchweek had begun on Wednesday, with Sudbury Cyclones' 4-0 win earning them automatic promotion to the Men's Premier in just their second season in League1 Ontario.

Friday saw Whitby secure three points as they concluded their season with a 1-0 victory at Waterloo United. Nigel Buckley scored the only goal of the game and ended 2025 as the division's top scorer with 21, helping Whitby to a fourth-placed finish.

In Saturday's match, Hamilton United and Pickering tied 1-1 with both goals coming in the first half, Elden Muheto equalizing for Pickering after Leandro Alberto Silverio's opener.

Master's FA put on a show in front of their fans, beating North Mississauga 4-0 at L'Amoreaux to end the summer in sixth place. Daniel Avila, John Ribeiro, Julius Dominelli, and Anthony Nelson all scored to end the season on a positive note.
