Woodbridge hit nine to win Men’s U20 League Final

Woodbridge Strikers made it two U20 titles in a single day with a dominant win in the men’s final.

Gianluca Vecchiarelli and Christian Rotundo both netted braces alongside five other goalscorers as Woodbridge put on a relentless show when it mattered most.

It was an even game in the first five minutes with both sides earning set-piece chances, but it was Woodbridge who made the most of their opportunity, with Antony Frasca losing his man in the penalty area to head home Leandro Stalteri’s cross.

Six minutes later, Braulio de Leon saved another Frasca header but straight into the path of Vecchiarelli, who struck to double his side’s lead.

London looked to respond and get into some promising positions, but Woodbridge were clinical, as Rotundo claimed his first of the evening with a looping header from another stunning cross to make it 3-0 to the Strikers at half-time.

Woodbridge showed no signs of slowing down in the second 45, with a clever bit of play down the left flank ending with Vecchiarelli finding the net to claim his second of the day, and his team’s fourth of the match.

Noah Girimonte ensured he got in on the act in front of goal, when he made it five 10 minutes later with a stunning strike from outside the box. Caleb Maxwell-Smith headed away a long free-kick before Girimonte took it down on his chest, set himself, and fired into the far post, giving De Leon no chance.

The rout continued in the next 15 minutes, with Woodbridge’s high press helping Rotundo claim his brace after a loose back-pass from Dawson Berrisford was pounced on, and a huge deflection carried the ball into the net for six.

With 20 minutes remaining, the Strikers continued to make the most of London’s defensive uncertainty from set-pieces, with Andrea Morra finding space in the six-yard box to head home.

Some lovely link-up play between Stalteri and Noah Ceolin ended with the latter firing past De Leon to give Woodbridge an eighth. Stalteri then claimed another assist, this time for Joshua Nicholson, who played a quick one-two and stayed cool, calm, and collected to chip it over the goalkeeper to make it a fine nine.

After finishing as runners-up in the Northeast Conference, but with a whopping 58 goals, Woodbridge’s U20s showed once again they are a force to be reckoned with and followed up their women’s U20 team’s success by winning their division.
