Close encounters

There was a selection of matches on May 9, and two of these ended level in the Men’s Championship.

Waterloo United hosted a 2-2 tie with North Mississauga to gain their first point of the season, with the hosts coming from behind following Damiano Sinaguglia’s opener, and he completed his brace later in the match to equalize and keep his side unbeaten in 2025.

York United Academy were the home side for their 1-1 tie against The Borough. Noah de Blasis thought he had won it for the visitors when he opened the scoring in injury time, but 60 seconds later, Alex Bergman rescued a point for the hosts.

Whitby beat Scrosoppi 2-0 in the Women’s Championship thanks to first-half goals from Alicia Tamburro and Tori Chia.

Saturday scorelines

It was a busy day across L1ON on Saturday, with numerous matches providing entertainment. The Women’s Premier saw four games, all ending in away wins.

North Toronto’s 5-0 away win at 2024 runners-up FC London took them to the top of the standings. After a goalless first half, Ashley Campbell made it 1-0 in the 49th minute, before claiming her brace on the 70-minute mark. Jade Abreo, Kayla Briggs, and Renee Watson then all scored to secure the points.

Defending champions NDC Ontario also enjoyed a winning Saturday, scoring two late goals against Waterloo United to win 2-0 on the road. Their patience paid off eventually when Victoria Rocci scored to make it 1-0 in the 87th minute, before Teegan Melenhorst claimed her fifth of the season to put the icing on the cake.

Elsewhere, Vaughan Azzurri claimed a 1-0 win at Alliance United thanks to a 64th-minute goal from Nia Fleming-Thompson, and Simcoe County Rovers beat Woodbridge Strikers 2-1 with Stefanie Young and Ally Rowe’s goals too much for Cat Rogers’ consolation.

Current defending Men’s Premier champions Scrosoppi were defeated for the first time in 2025, losing 2-1 at home to Alliance United. Kingsley Belele put the visitors 1-0 up in the fifth minute before Omari Cotterell’s equalizer after 25 minutes. 10 minutes later, Alliance retook the lead through Alexi Ivanov to give them all three points.

Also in the Men’s Premier, Oakville enjoyed a 2-1 away win, beating North Toronto to climb to the top of the standings. Michael Maslanka and Jalen Watson scored in the first half to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Cyrus Rollocks got one back for the hosts in the 50th minute, but it was not enough as the away side left with maximum points.

The Men’s Championship had three matches, as Sudbury Cyclones maintained their unbeaten start to 2025 with a 3-0 away win at Hamilton United. A Jaiden Santo brace and Timi Aliu handed the 10-man hosts their third loss of the season, while the visitors went to the top of the standings.

Also in the second tier, Master’s FA and Pickering tied 2-2 in a back-and-forth game. Lorenzo Mayer put the hosts 1-0 up with a penalty, before Ameer Madden equalized 16 minutes later. John Ribeiro gave Master’s the lead again in the 59th minute, but the visitors fought back again through Michael Mouratidis.

To round up the Saturday action, Windsor City enjoyed a 2-1 home win against Whitby thanks to Moustapha Kamate’s brace.

Late drama to finish

Only the Men’s Premier and Women’s Championship were in action on Sunday, but there was still movement in the standings.

In the former, Vaughan Azzurri completed a late comeback from 2-0 down to tie with Simcoe County Rovers. Micah Joseph and Benny Tesfaye scored to make it seem like the hosts would take all three points, but Ryan Robinson’s 82nd-minute goal and Justin Santos’ equalizer in the seventh minute of injury time rescued them a point.

St Catharines Roma Wolves claimed their first away win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Burlington. The home side took the lead through Monti Mohsen, but goals from Diego Rivera and Mason Petrucci gave the visitors maximum points.

In the Women’s Championship, Tecumseh remained at the top of the standings with a 2-0 win away at Unionville Milliken, and Burlington tied 0-0 with Rush Canada Academy.

League2 and L1 Cup action

Round Two of the L1 Cup has begun, with NDC Ontario securing a 2-0 victory against Oakville on Monday night. Alessandra Geraneo and Melisa Kekic were the scorers either side of the break.

St Catharines have their Round Two fixture next week, but will be wanting to quickly put their 3-2 loss against Cambridge United in Women’s League2 behind them. Fellow first team Railway City secured a 3-0 victory against Oakville L2, as Sudbury Cyclones lost 4-0 to Woodbridge L2.

There were big wins for Cambridge and Railway City in Men’s League2 as Rush Canada fell to a 2-1 defeat against Scrosoppi L2.
