Weekend Preview: Three leaders level on points

There are some exciting title races heating up in the Women’s Premier and Championship, as Matchweek Six approaches in League1 Ontario.

A top-four face-off

Just three points separate first and third place in the Women’s Championship, and leaders Pickering have their eyes over their shoulders with an extra game played.

On a Friday that could have big implications on the title race, Pickering are in action when they travel to third-place Whitby in a crucial game. The visitors are on 11 points as it stands, three above their opponents.

Elsewhere, second-place Tecumseh United host a Scrosoppi side that sit fourth in the standings, adding another layer to an important Friday evening. The home side are only one point off the summit with a game in hand, while the visitors have six points from a possible 12 and have an opportunity to make themselves title challengers.

Also on Friday, St Catharines Roma Wolves are the home side for their Men’s Premier match against second-place Oakville. The hosts sit seventh at this stage, with two wins from their five games, while the travelling side will be doing their bit to put themselves at the top of the standings after this weekend.

League leaders in action

Saturday is also set to be an important day in the battle for positions at the top.

In the Men’s Premier, current table-toppers Alliance United host bottom-side North Toronto and will be looking to respond to Oakville’s Friday-night match. The home side are unbeaten so far in 2025, with three wins and two ties, and will need to be on top form to capitalize on whatever Oakville do.

Also in the men’s top tier, Woodbridge Strikers travel to Simcoe County Rovers in a bid to join the leaders. The visiting side sit on eight points, and could move into a very comfortable position by the end of Saturday’s action if they can build on their 4-1 victory in the Men’s L1 Cup in midweek.

The Women’s Premier also has an intriguing array of Saturday fixtures, including the defending champions NDC Ontario on the road to face Alliance United. The current title holders are one of four sides currently battling at the summit at this stage, level on 12 points with first and second, and two ahead of fourth place.

It hasn’t been an ideal season for the winless Alliance so far, but these two sides have history given that they were the 2022 and 2023 Women’s Premier finalists with one win apiece from those two matches. Could they surprise NDC Ontario again this weekend?

In another clash involving top-four teams, Simcoe, who currently sit in first, host North Toronto. The visitors have three wins from their five matches so far and sit just below the leading three teams, so another victory would take them above their opponents.

Waterloo travel to FC London, looking to become real title challengers as opposed to outsiders, as they sit fifth at the moment.

In the Men’s Championship, Sudbury Cyclones can extend their gap at the top when they face Whitby away from home. The away side have 11 points from a possible 15 and can put the pressure on second-place Master’s FA, who play a day later.

Also in the second tier, Hamilton United host Waterloo United, as the former look to move away from the foot of the table against a side who claimed their first victory of the season last week.

A busy Sunday

The top-of-the-table action may be taking place on Friday and Saturday, but there’s plenty to look forward to on Sunday.

The Men’s Championship brings the majority of the action, beginning with Windsor City hosting Pickering at 2pm. The home side have struggled at the start of 2025, with one win in five, while Pickering will be aiming to make it consecutive home wins and bounce back from last week’s defeat at Burlington.

Master’s will be looking to respond to Sudbury’s Saturday result when they travel to Guelph United at 6:30pm. The away side are unbeaten at this stage but need to turn ties into wins if they are to challenge for the title. With four ties in six games, a win is the aim this weekend.

Elsewhere, York United Academy play North Mississauga at York Lions Stadium. This could be an interesting matchup, as the former have two wins and two ties from five matches, so they can kick-start a real fight at the top if they win against a side with an identical record so far in 2025.

To tie up Men’s Championship action, Unionville Milliken face The Borough. The former can move above their opponents with a win.

There are two Men’s Premier matches, beginning with Burlington against Sigma. Both sides have had difficult starts to life this season, and the home side can leapfrog the visitors into eighth if they take all three points. Last season’s runners-up, Vaughan Azzurri, face FC London.

Guelph United host Woodbridge Strikers in a mid-table battle in the Women’s Premier, and it is 10th versus second as North Mississauga travel to Vaughan Azzurri.

In the Women’s Championship, Burlington play Oakville, and Unionville Milliken host bottom-side Rush Canada Academy who are still waiting for their first win of the season.

L2 back in action

In the Men’s Southwest, Railway City can make it three wins from four when they host Waterloo United L2, and Cambridge United play on Sunday against Hamilton United L2.

Master’s travel to Pickering L2 on Friday, and Sudbury host Vaughan Azzurri L2 on Saturday in the Women’s Northeast. In the Southwest Conference, Railway City are on the road to Rush Canada L2, and St Catharines play FC London L2.

To conclude the Women’s League2 action, Cambridge United’s women face Guelph L2 on Sunday.
