Weekly Rewind: Fine Margins

The division leaders have remained resilient in Matchweek Eight, but those behind them are not giving up.

Home comforts

It was a quieter start to the matchweek than usual, but there were still a couple of important home victories.

NDC Ontario finished Friday at the top of the Women’s Premier after a 2-0 win against North Mississauga. The defending champions moved onto 18 points in the standings, thanks to a brace from Melisa Kekic – her fourth and fifth goals of the campaign. North Mississauga remain bottom, still searching for their first win.

There was a single game in the Men’s Championship to tie up Friday, and North Mississauga continued their promotion push with a 3-1 win against Windsor City. An early strike from Julian Srock followed by goals from Thierry Nsenga and Damiano Sinaguglia, was too much for Nicolas Fontecha’s late consolation.

Asserting dominance

In the Women’s Championship on Saturday, Pickering showed everyone why they sit top of the standings, beating Rush Canada Academy 8-2 in a massive win. Serena McDonald and Naya Cardoza both scored hat-tricks, alongside a penalty from Brianne Desa and a late finish from Alice Kopp.

Sudbury Cyclones put themselves in the front seat for promotion from the Men’s Championship as they beat The Borough 3-1. The sides went into this game as the top two in the table, and the Cyclones have now moved three points clear at the summit while The Borough are down to third.

Simcoe County Rovers also remained at the top of the Women’s Premier with a 2-0 win at FC London. Second-half goals from Jen Milligan and Ally Rowe moved them onto 19 points, with six wins from eight. Their eyes will still be over their shoulders, though, as NDC Ontario and Vaughan Azzurri are just one point behind.

Saturday spectacles

Although there is a gap at the top, only five points now separate second and seventh in the Men’s second tier after York United Academy enjoyed a 1-0 away win at Master’s FA. An injury-time penalty from Matteo Galati stole all three points at L’Amoreaux, as York moved to within three points of second.

To tie up the action in the Men’s Championship on Saturday, Pickering and Whitby played out a 2-2 tie at the Pickering Soccer Centre, with Nigel Buckley and Fadi Salback scoring for the visitors, and Ameer Madden and Gianluca Scurti finding the net for the hosts.

In the Men’s Premier, defending champions Scrosoppi could not take advantage of one of their games in hand as they fell to a 3-1 home defeat to Vaughan Azzurri. SFC now sit eight points from the top but do still have three games spare. Vaughan are third, just two points behind second.

Elsewhere, North Toronto claimed their second victory of 2025 with a 3-1 win against Sigma, thanks to goals from Luca di Marco, Roussos Nikolakis, and a penalty from Tadija Vukas.

Piling on the pressure

Woodbridge Strikers won the battle at the summit of the Men’s Premier on Sunday, beating Alliance United 1-0 away from home. The game looked to be ending level, but an 88th-minute goal from Anthony Morano moved Woodbridge to within three points of top spot. With two games in hand, the Strikers are in a prime position to take advantage.

There were also 1-0 wins for Oakville and Burlington, who beat Simcoe County Rovers and FC London, respectively. Oakville sit in fourth, level on points with Vaughan ahead of them, and six points from top with two games in hand.

It was a busy Sunday in the women’s top tier too, as North Toronto claimed a 4-1 win away from home against Guelph United. A Lauren Rowe brace and goals from Elise Bell and Kiyomi McCausland gave the visitors their fifth win of the season and put them within two points of first place.

Vaughan Azzurri continued their hunt for the title, beating Woodbridge Strikers 3-0 in a convincing away win. Nia Fleming-Thompson scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season in the first half, and Saleena Banga secured the points with 12 minutes left in the game. Finally, Alliance United and Waterloo United tied 0-0.

In the Women’s Championship, Unionville Milliken started the day in perfect fashion, winning 6-1 at Burlington. In their second victory of 2025, Miya Grant-Clavijio’s hat-trick, alongside goals from Ines Delhomelle, Eleftheria Mouratidis, and Allie Grant-Clavijo, moved them onto seven points, while Burlington remained bottom.

Both Hamilton United and Scrosoppi enjoyed 1-0 wins, beating Tecumseh (who have lost top spot) and Oakville, respectively.

To conclude the L1ON action, Unionville Milliken beat Waterloo United 2-1 in the Men’s Championship.

Important wins in L2

Rush Canada Academy enjoyed another winning weekend in the Men’s Central Conference, beating North Mississauga 3-1 on Saturday. Railway City failed to put pressure on the top two in the Southwest Conference when they lost 3-0 to St Catharines Roma Wolves. Cambridge United could have made it seven wins from seven, but their match against Guelph United was postponed.

In the Women’s Northeast Conference, Sudbury Cyclones won 5-2 away at Master’s on Saturday. After their second victory of 2025, the Cyclones have moved up to ninth, while their opponents remain winless. In the Southwest Conference, Railway City won 2-0 at Cambridge United.
