Weekend Preview: Title races to remember

Reigning champions Scrosoppi host 2023 champions Simcoe in a Men’s Premier match that could alter the course of the title race, as time begins to run out in the women’s competitions.

Outside chance

After Thursday night’s Women’s L1 Cup semifinals, which saw Alliance United and North Toronto progress to the trophy decider, the action continues in the regular seasons on Friday.

The top four in the Women’s Premier seems to be set in stone, but if either Waterloo United or Guelph United win their match on Friday there is a slim chance to catch up. The gap between Vaughan Azzurri in fourth and Waterloo in fifth is currently nine points, so a win is crucial if the latter are to move up the table.

Elsewhere on Friday evening, it is eighth vs ninth in the Men’s Premier, as St Catharines Roma Wolves host Sigma. Maximum points for the home side would take them as high as fifth going into Saturday, but it will be a close-fought game against a team with a similar record so far in 2025.

Action continues in the men’s second tier as York United Academy travel to Windsor City in a bid to close the gap to first place. Three points for the visitors would move them above The Borough and to within three points of top spot ahead of Sudbury Cyclones’ match on Saturday.

Whitby and Guelph currently sit level on points in mid-table, but a win for either side would move them onto 19 points and firmly into the top-three battle.

Crunch time

It is a crucial Saturday at the top of the Men’s Premier on Saturday as the leading four are in action. The day begins with Oakville’s visit to Burlington, two sides who sit mid-table, but either could join the fight with a victory.

To celebrate the ‘Battle of Halton’ there are plenty of activities and promotions planned for the matchday, including reduced ticket prices, a rally towel for every fan, and a tailgate.

Current table toppers Alliance United host FC London as they hope to hold onto first place for as long as possible. They currently have a one-point gap to Woodbridge Strikers in second, but the latter have three games in hand. FC London have just one win from 11 so far, so this will be another tough game for them.

Woodbridge travel to North Toronto where beating Alliance’s result would move the visitors to first place in the standings, which they have been waiting to do for a while with so many spare matches. North Toronto have also struggled this year, so the away side will see this as another chance to win.

It is third against fourth as defending champions Scrosoppi host Simcoe County Rovers. Both teams are three points away from first place, so this is a very important game if either is to challenge at the summit.

NDC Ontario also continue their title hunt in the Women’s Premier with their visit to FC London. A win would create a four-point gap between the away side and Simcoe behind them, who play a day later.

Elsewhere, Woodbridge Strikers host North Mississauga, as both sides aim to move away from the bottom half of the standings.

Promotion hunting

Sudbury Cyclones continue their fight at the top of the Men’s Championship on Saturday when they host North Mississauga. Waterloo United are also in action – they play Pickering at Rim Park.

Pickering are chasing Scrosoppi for top spot in the Women’s Championship after the latter leapfrogged them last weekend. They play Whitby on Saturday evening, and can move back above SFC, who play a day later.

Unionville Milliken travel to Rush Canada Academy to conclude a busy Saturday of L1ON action.

Fighting back

Sunday concludes an action-packed weekend and sees Simcoe County Rovers looking to reclaim top spot in the Women’s Premier. With NDC Ontario playing a day earlier, the gap to first could be as big as four points before Simcoe travel to a Vaughan Azzurri side who still have an outside chance of league success this year.

The final Women’s Premier game this weekend involves Alliance United hosting North Toronto, as the latter look to put the pressure on the top two and move onto 29 points.

The Borough host Hamilton United in the men’s second tier, still aiming to fight Sudbury for the title, but the minimum has to be remaining in the top two and securing promotion.

Tying up Men’s Championship games, Master’s FA face Unionville Milliken away from home. Scrosoppi continue their promotion hunt in the Women’s Championship against Tecumseh United, and Oakville host Burlington.

Taking advantage

Cambridge United can extend their gap to second place in the Men’s League2 Southwest Conference on Sunday when they play Hamilton United. The home side have eight wins and a loss so far, so are looking for another three points to strengthen their place at the top. A day earlier, Rush Canada Academy host Burlington in the Central Conference.

In the Women’s Northeast Conference on Saturday, Sudbury Cyclones are the home side when they play Simcoe County Rovers, and a day later Railway City face St Catharines in the Southwest Conference, while Cambridge United travel to FC London.
